Chapter 69

Only the desk lamp is on in Kim Jongin’s room. The yellow light falls on the two people, making the atmosphere in the room extra warm tonight.

Baekhyun writes the last step in the chemical equation on the paper slowly and then turns towards the younger boy.

Jongin nods to confirm that he understands.

Baekhyun touches Jongin’s head, the softness of his dark hair pleasing to touch. “Jongin, I didn’t know you were strong in Chemistry!”

Jongin mumbles something that sounds like: “I’ve always been okay in Chemistry.”

Not minding the dancer’s lack of modesty, Baekhyun smiles and ruffles his hair again. “Based on this, I think you don’t need to worry about Chemistry. But Physics…”

Jongin looks at Baekhyun dejectedly.

The door is pushed open and Jongin’s mom enters the room, carrying a huge plate of fruits. Her voice is as bubbly as ever. “Ah! You two must be tired! How about eating fruits to boost your energy?”

“Thank you, Aunty!” Baekhyun smiles and stands to receive the plate from Jongin’s mom. Jongin, on the other hand, frowns and says: “Mom, don’t mind us. We can get it ourselves.”

Baekhyun subtly pinches the younger boy, silencing him.

This doesn’t go unnoticed and she smiles at Baekhyun, patting him on the head. “Jongin, if only you can be as likeable as your Baekhyun hyung…You’re always so stone-faced!”

Jongin looks even more annoyed.

At this time, the doorbell rings. Through Jongin’s open bedroom door, they hear the voice from downstairs.

“Hi Uncle! I am Oh Sehun.”

“Sehun’s here?” Jongin’s mom turns to ask Baekhyun and Jongin quizzically. As expected, the older boy seems confused while the latter’s expression has darkened completely.

Probably familiar with the Kim household already, Sehun chats with Jongin’s dad for a bit and then comes up the stairs into Jongin’s room. He says with his signature smile and sweet voice: “Hello Aunty! I’m here so that Baekhyun hyung can tutor me as well!”

“Good, Sehun! I hear from Baekhyun that you’re skipping grades too! You two are such hard-working kids!” Naturally, Jongin’s mom isn’t able to resist likeable boys like Sehun and Baekhyun. She smiles widely and exits, closing the door behind her.

The second she leaves, Jongin’s temper flares: “What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to learn.” Sehun answers, smiling at Baekhyun as he brings out his book. Of course, he won’t tell the two that he finds strange pleasure in messing with Jongin.

“If you want to learn, just go to Kyungsoo hyung or Chanyeol hyung. Why does it have to be Baekhyun hyung? Baekhyun hyung is mine.”

Jongin is seriously unhappy. He has said before that he and Sehun are both the type of people who would prioritize love over friendship, friends through the bad times, but not necessarily through the good times. Now, under the guise of giving them a surprise, Sehun disturbing his and Baekhyun’s own little world is utterly unforgivable.

“Chanyeol hyung is not as good as I am. Kyungsoo hyung refuses to see me, saying he will be ruined if he studies with me. I have no idea why.”

As if you really have no idea why… Both Jongin and Baekhyun see the smile on Sehun’s face and feel headaches coming on.

“Baekhyun hyung, I read through second year’s Physics book first. I have a few questions.” Sehun opens the textbook and flips through the pages with paragraphs highlighted in different colours and handwritten notes meticulously written on the sides. He then takes out another large notebook with solutions to the different practice exercises.

Baekhyun notices that Sehun seems to have finished reading almost half of the textbook in just a few days. His eyes fall on the equally thick books spilling out of his bag and he feels a little teary-eyed.

Xiao Lu hyung, this kid is working so hard. I really wish you could see it.

“Baekhyun hyung? Baekhyun hyung?” Sehun has to call twice before the older boy reacts. The latter smiles and says: “Come, Sehun. Hyung will explain to you. Jongin? Just read through what we will be studying tomorrow, and then ask me what you don’t understand, okay?”

Jongin doesn’t answer. Baekhyun and Sehun both turn around and see Jongin staring blankly at Sehun’s open book.

“Jongin?”

Jongin breaks out of his trance, looking a little depressed.

Just by one look, Baekhyun can tell why Jongin is depressed. He smiles at Sehun and the younger boy shrugs his shoulders.

Actually, Jongin and Sehun have a lot in common.

Not only are they merely three months apart, Jongin is only taller than Sehun by 1 cm. They’re both talented dancers and similarly like people older than them.

In terms of personality, these two are equally stubborn. If you’d look at the two of them, you’d think that Jongin is significantly more stubborn, but that’s not really the case. Sehun is the type who likes to smile and chat with everyone, but if he insists on something, nobody can change his mind.

However, Sehun is the type who will immediately act on what he’s certain about. Hesitating and delaying is not his style. While Jongin, possibly because of his subdued personality or his lack of confidence, he seems to be the type who would back down more easily, yet he still won’t give up.

It’s actually pretty fun analyzing these two. Baekhyun thinks that if he spends more time with them, he can become a psychologist already.

Chapter 70

Kim Jongin and Oh Sehun have gone officially insane.

This is Park Chanyeol and Do Kyungsoo’s conclusion after several days of observation. Without any hesitation, they share this with Junmyeon who has already entered university. However, out of fear for what Sehun might do to them, they don’t tell Luhan. Thus, Yixing and Yifan are also kept in the dark.

Carrying a big and heavy backpack has always been Baekhyun’s trademark but now both Sehun and Jongin are giving Baekhyun a run for his money, each carrying gigantic backpacks weighed down with heavy textbooks.

Naturally, they’ve been on temporary leave of absence from their school organizations. After school, they’d rather stay to review than eat at a nearby restaurant. Even Luhan has sent text messages to interrogate Baekhyun, asking what’s happening with Sehun. The younger boy has become so busy that even Luhan’s starting to notice something’s up.

Baekhyun can only make up lame excuses since Sehun insists that he wants to give his Luhan hyung a surprise.

Actually, even he could no longer stop Sehun and Jongin’s madness now. The two of them are studying their butts off, dark circles becoming worse showing how sleep-deprived they are.

There are times wherein Baekhyun would help Jongin and Sehun review in Jongin’s house until really late and the three of them would just fall asleep on the bed out of exhaustion. The next morning, they’ll rush to take showers, recycle their clothes from the day before, and run to school.

This situation continues for several months and it’s only until the next year’s January that things became better.

It’s not that Sehun and Jongin have decided to take it easy, but Luhan, who has been kept in the dark for so long, finally can’t take Sehun being almost always unreachable and forces the truth out of Kyungsoo. Once he hears about Sehun’s decision, he rushes to the senior high department from the university and storms into their classroom.

When he sees Sehun reading his textbook with circles darker than Zitao’s, he has to stop himself from crying.

Baekhyun has often thought about how Luhan would react when he finds out but he doesn’t expect that Luhan would actually hug Sehun in class with tears streaming down his face.

Aish, our Luhan hyung is a softie. He’s such an angel

Although most often than not a gossipy and evil angel…

Judging from Sehun’s expression, he looks like he’ll still think it’s all worth it even if he has to do this for three to five years more.

Baekhyun glances at Sehun and Luhan, arms still locked in an embrace, and then he turns his face towards Jongin seated by the window. The younger boy has lost so much weight and has equally dark circles. Baekhyun walks over and cradles Jongin’s head in his arms.

The younger boy tries to move his head, puzzled about what’s happening.

Taking advantage of the fact that majority of the class is focused on Sehun and Luhan, Baekhyun quickly kisses the tip of Jongin’s nose. “Jongin… You’ve also worked hard…”

“No, it’s okay…” Jongin’s voice is muffled against Baekhyun’s clothes, obviously a little low-spirited. “I was just thinking…”

Baekhyun looks around again. When he confirms that both Chanyeol and Kyungsoo are now cheering on Sehun and Luhan, he quickly kisses Jongin’s forehead. “Your birthday’s coming up, Jongin. Give yourself a break. Relax a little.”

Jongin nestles his head deeper into Baekhyun’s chest.

What Baekhyun means by giving Jongin a break is similar to what Luhan did for Sehun before. But it’s somehow different with Luhan, because although Luhan has graciously cooked them dinner before which had led to Sehun getting food poisoning, at least he has experience in the kitchen already while Baekhyun has never cooked in his life.

But as what Chanyeol has said before, even if Baekhyun makes white arsenic, Jongin will still swallow everything with a smile without any hesitation, just like Sehun that day when Luhan fed him poison.

These two dumb kids…

So after school, for the first time in months, Jongin doesn’t head straight home to study. Instead, he follows closely behind Baekhyun as he pushes a shopping cart in a supermarket that he has barely set foot in since he could remember.

Baekhyun is a little lost too but he’s somehow better than Jongin. He looks around and tries to remember what his mom used to buy to prepare dinner.

This actually becomes cute sight to watch, Baekhyun shouting out ingredients and Jongin grabbing it to hand to Baekhyun. Not to mention the fact that both of them are still in their school uniforms.

Another factor that makes Baekhyun and Jongin even more attention-grabbing is the Chinese duo Yifan and Yixing who seem to be omnipresent. Since Luhan has been around less, Yixing and Yifan have become a duo like Chanyeol and Kyungsoo. However, it looks like despite losing Luhan, they still cause more trouble than ever.

Yifan is tall and ridiculously handsome, while Yixing keeps on making noises no different from when Chanyeol and Baekhyun are together, so they actually call more attention to themselves than Baekyun and Jongin, not to mention that they run over happily, creating a ruckus with their shouts of ‘You two are so sweet!’.

Jongin thinks he needs to channel Sehun’s eye-rolling again.

Baekhyun, on the other hand, is already rolling his eyes.

“Not as sweet as you two. Why are you in the supermarket?” Baekhyun asks drily.

“Because we heard you’re going to make dinner for Jongin tonight and we want to ask if we could join you.” Yixing looks at Baekhyun with his sweet smile and dimples, which would have been effective if only Baekhyun didn’t know him so well already.

“You take care of your own dinner problems. I am not responsible for you two!” Baekhyun refuses and tells Jongin they should get going.

Jongin starts walking but is blocked by Yifan’s long leg. “Come on… Baekhyun’s parents are not home, so as the masters of the house, you two should treat us like guests, right?”

It looks like they have no chance of saying no, especially under the pressure of Yifan’s persistent and threatening stare.
