Chapter 65
“I have a strong heart… I have a strong heart…”
Kyungsoo hears Baekhyun chanting something in front and he leans forward to listen. Finally making out what the older boy is repeating over and over, his eyes grow wide, confused: “Baekhyun, what are you saying?”
Baekhyun turns around abruptly and grabs Kyungsoo’s wrist: “Quick! Tell me that I have a strong heart! I can take anything! I can face anything calmly!”
Kyungsoo gives him a ‘have you gone mad?’ look.
“Hurry up and tell me that!” Baekhyun pulls on Kyungsoo’s sleeve and shakes.
“Fine! You have a strong heart. You can take anything. You can face anything calmly!” Kyungsoo rolls his eyes in exasperation. When he turns his head, he sees Chanyeol entering the classroom.
Baekhyun runs over and grabs his sleeve: “I have a strong heart, right? Answer me!”
Chanyeol blinks and smiles especially warmly: “Of course, of course. The fact that you can be in a relationship with Kim Jongin is proof of that. Why? What’s wrong? Why are you asking this?”
Baekhyun goes back to his seat.
“Kim Jongin says he wants to skip a grade.”
Kyungsoo spits out the water he was in the middle of drinking. Chanyeol freezes in his place.
“Skip a grade? To third year? Do you mean that?”
“Yes.” Baekhyun looks at his best friends with a frown. “The crucial problem here is I’m trying my best to convince myself to accept this but I’m failing miserably. What I really want to do now is storm into Jongin’s classroom, pull on his collar, and scream at him!”
“He’s got balls, man.” Chanyeol sighs as he sits. “There have only been a few who skipped grades in school history. Yixing hyung doesn’t count. He skipped back in junior high.”
“The power of love…” Kyungsoo says, wiping his desk solemnly.
Baekhyun slumps on his desk, shaking his head: “Help me think of a way to stop him!”
“If he’s dead set on this, nothing you say will change his mind.” Chanyeol says. “I heard from Sehun that when Kim Jongin first had a crush on you, he was so adamant about it. Nobody could convince him otherwise.”
Baekhyun becomes more annoyed: “How can there be no way? Do I have to show him how difficult it is so that he’ll back down? Or do I have to talk to his teacher?”
“Don’t. He’ll just get angry at you.” Chanyeol warns.
“As if he can!” Kyungsoo argues. “But he will feel incredibly hurt.”
Baekhyun feels his headache worsen with Chanyeol and Kyungsoo’s inputs. He sits up and slumps over his desk again. “What should I do? What should I do? He’s killing me here…”
“I think that if he really wants to do this, don’t discourage him and let him try.” Seeing how Baekhyun pained Baekhyun looks, Chanyeol decides to give his honest opinion.
“How can I do that?” Baekhyun yells. “How can I allow him to subject himself to so much pressure? He already has a bad waist and he’s still so young. If he skips a grade, it’ll be too much for him to take.”
“But if that’s what he wants to do, why not let him give it a shot?” Chanyeol rationalizes. “Anyway, if he fails there’s not really much of a loss, he’ll just continue studying.”
“That much stress is a huge deal!” Baekhyun still disagrees. “How do I explain to him that it’s just one year of us not being in the same campus and that there won’t be any bad outcomes?”
“For Kim Jongin, I think not being in the same school is already the worst outcome.” Kyungsoo says. “Being in the same school but not in the same class is already unbearable for him. Can you expect him to survive being in Sehun and Luhan’s situation and see you for just a few times a week?”
Baekhyun doesn’t speak.
“Let’s be real here. You won’t be used to it too, right? You won’t feel comfortable about the distance too, right?” Chanyeol asks insightfully.
Baekhyun stays silent.
Will he be not used to it? Of course, it will be an adjustment for him too. Although he appears to be fine about it, he admits to feeling helpless too when Jongin brought up graduation.
Jongin-ah, I think I’m just afraid. I’m afraid that you’re the one who will be giving and sacrificing, while I on the other hand have no idea what I can do to change this reality.
I thought that age was only going to be a factor for Sehun and Luhan. But now, even for us with a gap of just one school year, it’s about to be a problem that we have to face sooner or later. If in the end you don’t get the outcome you wanted, how do I comfort you who have tried your best but with no return?
I’m not afraid that I won’t be able to reciprocate your strong feelings, but if that time comes, I feel like there’s nothing I would be able to do.
Jongin, I finally understand what Luhan meant by ‘unequal relationship’. Jongin, actually I should have realized this a long time ago. Sometimes, you liking me that much makes me feel uneasy too.
“If he really wants to, just let him try.” Chanyeol’s voice sounds like it’s coming from somewhere very far away, interrupting Baekhyun’s thoughts.
Baekhyun recovers, looking at Chanyeol and Kyungsoo in confusion.
“Hmm?”
“That kid, Kim Jongin… He looks subdued and quiet, but deep down he has a perseverance that not many people know about.” Chanyeol answers seriously after thinking.
Baekhyun blinks, signalling for him to continue.
“Jongin is still young. What’s wrong with letting him be crazy for love? If he fails, it won’t be the end of the world, right?” Chanyeol scratches his head. “Anyway, as we’ve said, you won’t be able to stop him.”
Baekhyun who has been feeling a little moved with Chanyeol’s speech jumps up in annoyance at the last sentence: “Park Chanyeol, are you an idiot? Why did I believe that you’d say something nice for a change?”
Chapter 66
When a knock is heard upon the front door of the Kim residence, the one who opens the door is Kim Jongin’s mom.
Standing in front of her is a thin and refined-looking boy, with brown mushroom hair and a fair little face. The boy smiles toothily with crescent eyes: “Are you Jongin’s mom? Hello, Aunty! I am Jongin’s senior in school. My name is Byun Baekhyun.”
“You’re Baekhyun?” Recognition flashes in her eyes and she breaks out in a smile. “Jongin mentions you often! I finally meet you in person today!”
Jongin’s mom has short hair, doe eyes, and double lids. She looks especially bright and bubbly when she smiles.
Baekhyun enters the house and changes into the slippers provided, all the while grinning cutely and likably: “Ah! Did he say anything bad about me, Aunty?”
“Of course not, he always says how good you are! More times than Sehun, Taemin, and the others.” Jongin’s mom rambles on as she brings him tea. “Our Jongin… he’s always quiet. We’re not always around. He doesn’t have a lot of friends to begin with and those like you are even fewer.”
“Yes. Jongin’s not very sociable, but he’s a really great person.” Baekhyun nods adorably. “Oh, where’s Jongin, Aunty?”
“Jongin is sleeping upstairs.” She goes to the foot of the staircase and shouts towards the second floor: “Jongin-ah! Your friend’s here to see you! Come down!”
There’s no response whatsoever from the second floor.
“He’s probably still asleep.” Jongin’s mom looks at Baekhyun apologetically. The boy smiles and says: “It’s okay! While I wait for him to wake up, is there anything I can help you with?”
“Aish, what do boys know about cooking? Why is Jongin still asleep? Kim Jongin! Get down here! Kim Jongin, your schoolmate’s here!”
Baekhyun thinks for a moment and reminds Jongin’s mom kindly: “Aunty, do you want to try telling Jongin that I’m here?”
“Kim Jongin! Your schoolmate Baekhyun is here!” She yells, stretching her vowels.
Baekhyun is shocked and speechless, not expecting Jongin’s mom to be so lively and energetic, the complete opposite of her son. Suddenly, he hears a loud thud from upstairs, hurried footsteps, and a door opening.
Kim Jongin appears at the top of the staircase.
Wearing a black sleeveless shirt and shorts, hair sticking up all over the place, Jongin stares at Baekhyun in panic, wondering what the older boy is doing in his house.
“Baek… Baekhyun hyung?” He smiles goofily after recovering from his shock and runs down the stairs, clumsily hitting the railing. He stops beside Baekhyun, scratching his head.
Baekhyun glances at Jongin wordlessly and then at Jongin’s mom who’s smiling quite contentedly for some reason. He shrugs and flashes his standard Baekhyun smile, saying: “Aunty, I’m actually here to tutor Jongin.”
“Oh! You mean about him skipping a grade right?”
Baekhyun looks at Jongin’s mom in surprise: “Oh? He told you about it? I thought… I mean... Yes.”
“When he started looking at third year class curriculums out of the blue, anyone could tell what he’s planning. I don’t press him if he doesn’t feel like mentioning it.” She says cheerfully. “Although I don’t know why he has decided this, since it’s what he wants, then we should just support him. Don’t you agree, Baekhyun?”
Baekhyun’s eyes widen.
“Baekhyun-ah, let me tell you. This child has always been like this. He rarely insists on anything, but once he decides on something, no one can change his mind. That’s how he was as a little boy when he wanted to learn dancing. And it looks like he feels the same way about skipping a grade. So whatever he insists and perseveres about is certainly what he thinks is the most important. We will always support him.”
Baekhyun peers at the dancer who has his head down, biting his lip. When he looks up, his expression makes the older boy want to reach out and ruffle his hair.
“So Baekhyun, you have to help our Jongin!”
Jongin’s mom pumps her arms enthusiastically in the air, reminding Baekhyun of a scene from a manga he just read. He pulls Jongin’s arm and says: “Okay, Aunty! We’ll head upstairs now!”
“Okay, go on! Jongin-ah, you have to listen to your Baekhyun hyung, okay?”
“Of course, I always listen to him…” Jongin says softly, following Baekhyun upstairs obediently, like a puppy with an invisible leash.
Jongin’s bed is a mess. It looks like he slept really well earlier. The younger boy hurries to block Baekhyun from entering the room.
“Hyung! Hyung! Wait a minute. Let me…”
Baekhyun pushes him away. “Do you think I’ll mind? Let me in!” As he enters Jongin’s room, he sees the wrinkled sheets and clothes thrown all over the place, frowning in mock disgust.
Jongin turns red in the face, closing the door while saying: “I’m sorry…”
Seeing him looking ashamed, Baekhyun sighs and says: “You idiot. Get over here.”
Jongin obeys, not understanding why. Baekhyun grabs his collar and forces him to bend down. Although the action was rough, the kiss on Jongin’s lips was very gentle.
Baekhyun kisses Jongin’s lips softly. Releasing the younger boy’s shirt, he waves his fist at him. “Since you’ve decided to skip a grade, then okay!. Hyung supports you! But starting today your life will be hell.”
Jongin wakes up from his trance and nods seriously.
“When are you transferring to high 3?” Baekhyun remembers the question that has been bugging him.
Jongin blinks.
“What are you thinking about again?” Baekhyun knocks his head. “Jongin-ah ,I know you’re not super smart but you can’t always be this slow.”
“Oh… I… Skipping to third year is easy, but I requested to be placed in your class, so it would take a few days.” Jongin touches the spot on his head where Baekhyun knocked on and smiles. This stuns the older boy and he can’t stop himself from knocking on Jongin’s head again: “My class? You’re transferring to my section?”
“Hyung doesn’t want me to?” Jongin’s face changes instantly.
Baekhyun thinks to himself: What have you been learning from Oh Sehun? All these new coy expressions don’t suit you, okay? But why do I still find them cute?
“I don’t mean that... Whatever you want, okay?” Baekhyun changes his helpless expression into a smile, shifting the topic of conversation as well. “Where was I? Oh! Since you;ve decided to skip a grade, you can’t slack off! Hyung will be with you every step of the way until we take the national exams!”
Jongin looks at Baekhyun being so passionate and he laughs, imagining a grand setting of mountainous waves surging against huge boulders behind him.
“What are you laughing about? Your mom is right. Since this is something you are persevering for, I won’t discourage it.” Baekhyun is a little miffed that Jongin’s laughing at him but decides to continue with his pep talk. “So let’s work hard together!”
Jongin stares at him for a few seconds, a magnificent smile breaking out on his face.
“Okay!”
