Chapter 55

Baekhyun, Chanyeol and Kyungsoo receive news that they have won first place in the national competition while in class. Junmyeon barges into their classroom in excitement, only to quickly exit and bow his apologies to the professor for interrupting the lecture.

Kyungsoo is even more excited than Junmyeon, completely in a state of bliss like he has just won the lottery. He talks non-stop for the entire day that even Chanyeol calls him out for it.

After school, Jongin’s class is dismissed earlier. He waits near Baekhyun’s classroom door as usual and attracts the attention of the older boy’s entire class.

Although the weather has become a little warmer, it’s still quite cold. For some reason, Jongin is wearing just a black polo shirt with black pants, school jacket nowhere in sight. Leaning on the railings with his backpack over his shoulder, his outfit makes him look taller and leaner.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s not fair that Kim Jongin has this excellent figure already and he’s only a freshman in senior high.” Chanyeol whispers to Kyungsoo amidst his female classmates’ excited squeals.

Kyungsoo sneaks a look at those broad shoulders, long legs and slim waist. He nods solemnly and glances at Baekhyun.

Baekhyun is mid-yawn, slumped on his desk, when he feels eyes burning a hole in his skull. He turns his head and scrunches his nose: “What?”

Chanyeol gestures for him to look outside.

Baekhyun obeys and meets Jongin’s eyes, the latter breaking out in a wide smile, his usually stony face brightening up instantly.

Baekhyun frowns at him, muttering: “Why is he not wearing a jacket?”

Before Chanyeol and Kyungsoo can blurt out ‘Him in this outfit is such a feast for the eyes!’, Baekhyun’s comment makes them want to kneel down in shame. The things one considers out of love is really in a whole other level. Look at Baekhyun! He’s so thoughtful.

Next, Kyungsoo says bitterly: “Baekhyun never cared about me when I didn’t wear enough clothes during winter.”

Chanyeol ruffles the wide-eyed boy’s hair to comfort him.

Noticing that his class is becoming more restless by the minute, the professor glances at Jongin outside the door and remembers Junmyeon barging in earlier. He thinks that maybe the winning team has plans to going out and celebrate so after a slight hesitation, he kindly tells the class they’re dismissed.

Baekhyun runs out as soon as the professor makes his announcement and grabs Jongin’s arm.

“Hyung?” Jongin asks in confusion as he sees Baekhyun’s angry expression.

“Why are you standing in a draft when you have so little clothes on? You idiot!” Baekhyun pulls Jongin towards his classroom. The dancer obeys and understands belatedly, rushing to explain: “I don’t feel that cold…”

“Where’s your jacket?” Baekhyun tugs on Jongin’s bag.

“Someone took my jacket when I removed it in gym class today.”

Or to put it more accurately, someone stole his jacket. When he returned for it, he saw a few girls arguing over his jacket, pulling it back and forth. The entire scene gave him a headache so he decided to just give up it up for the greater good.

“I’ve told you so many times not to leave your jacket in the gym. People always lose their clothes there! Chanyeol, Luhan hyung, Yifan hyung, they’ve often lost their clothes and towels. That’s why I never take off my jacket when I’m there.” It has never crossed Baekhyun’s mind that losing things meant someone was stealing them intentionally. He takes out a jacket from his locker and shoves it in Jongin’s hands.

“I don’t have my freshmen jacket here but I have a spare. Just make do with mine.”

Jongin obediently wears Baekhyun’s jacket. Although it’s a little snug and short, the upward curve of his lips shows how happy he is.

“Oh! Chanyeol hyung! Kyungsoo hyung!” Jongin calls out suddenly, foiling the two’s plan to creep out quietly. “Junmyeon hyung says we should have a party to celebrate our win. He tells me to inform you so we can go together.”

“You can go with Baekhyun. Tell us the address and we’ll go on our own.” Kyungsoo answers sadly as he glances at Jongin and Baekhyun who look incredibly compatible with their height difference.

With Jongin’s eyes communicating his approval with ‘Yes, you two go ahead!’, Kyungsoo thinks he has made the right decision. But before they can leave, Baekhyun calls them back: “Why are you two in a hurry? Why can’t we go together?”

Baekhyun pretends not to see the pleading look Jongin shoots him.

As Baekhyun hoists his gigantic gray backpack on his shoulder, Jongin tugs the older boy’s hand, as if remembering something.

“What?”

“Umm… It’s nothing.” Jongin hesitates for a while but decides to say it anyway. “Just that when I was in third year of junior high, I would see hyung carrying this huge bag, bouncing it up and down. I wondered then. Didn’t you find your bag heavy? In the end I realized that you don’t really have a lot of things in that bag.”

“Ha? Oh… I’ve had this bag for a while now. It can hold a lot of things.”

Jongin remembers something else and adds: “Also, when I first joined the arts organization and Baekhyun hyung, you were in charge of recruitment, I sat at the desk across Chanyeol and Kyungsoo.”

“Oh?” Baek has a vague memory of that day. He was in a really good mood and joked around a lot with Chanyeol and Kyungsoo.

“When I saw Baekhyun hyung drinking water, I suddenly wished I could become that water bottle.”

Baekhyun doesn’t know what to do with Jongin’s stories. He shakes his head and says: “Oh. Then don’t you think becoming my lip balm would be better? Or my chopsticks?”

Jongin doesn’t mind him and continues talking.

“Ah! Also that one time when we lived together in the dorm! Junmyeon hyung was standing between us. When he was talking, I kept looking at you, although you didn’t seem to notice.”

Baekhyun thinks: Do you think I’m dumb? You were being so obvious! How could I not notice? It’s just that at that time, I couldn’t understand the meaning behind your intense stares.

But considering how Jongin is feeling right now, he decides not to say anything.

Jongin thinks for a moment and then tugs on the tight jacket he’s wearing, saying softly: “Back in those days… Baekhyun hyung, you weren’t mine yet.”

Baekhyun thinks again: Why are you saying these melodramatic things now? Is it because you want me to know what you were going through back when you were secretly crushing on me? How should I react? But it seems like his thoughts will forever be unable to keep up with his actions. Before he knows it, his arm is already around Jongin’s shoulders.

“Your Baekhyun hyung does not belong to anyone…”

Noticing that Jongin’s face has fallen, Baekhyun sighs and uses his cheek to nudge Jongin’s chin. He then pinches Jongin’s waist. “So you should feel lucky, Jongin. Since you like hyung so much, hyung doesn’t mind belonging to you in the meantime.”

Chapter 56

Probably because of the celebration, Baekhyun gets sick the next day, and it’s only in second period that he starts feeling the symptoms.

“I didn’t even drink! Why am I sick?” Baekhyun slumps over his table weakly, looking like a soft cotton ball, his pale face with a tinge of red, eyes slightly drooping.

Chanyeol finds Baekhyun really cute when he’s sick, but he’s afraid that Kim Jongin would suddenly appear out of nowhere. Slapping his hand as if to get rid of the urge, he wails: “I really want a miniature Baekhyun and keep him in my pocket! When I’m bored, I can take him out and play with him. When he’s hungry, I can give him candy and make him happy…”

Kyungsoo thinks the taller boy is being especially perverted so he looks away, pretending not to hear.

Baekhyun rests on his desk for a while, taking a cup of warm water from Chanyeol and drinking Kyungsoo’s medicine. He slumps over his table again groggily.

So when Jongin arrives outside Senior High 2 Section C during lunch time, he sees a very pink Baekhyun, resting his head on the desk.

He’s so cute…

Before Jongin can withdraw his infatuated look, Kyungsoo and Chanyeol appear at both his sides.

“Baekhyun is sick.”

“He’s been sick all morning.”

“He already drank medicine.”

“You have to take care of him. Don’t forget.”

Jongin panics. “Baekhyun hyung is sick? Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Should we have told you and let you worry in class all morning?” Chanyeol pushes the dancer towards the door. “Hurry up inside!”, all the while biting an imaginary handkerchief and thinking: I really want to keep Baekhyun in my pocket and take care of him!

Kyungsoo pulls on the pained Chanyeol’s clothes and drags him somewhere far away. Jongin rushes inside the classroom, squatting beside the desk as he looks at the older boy.

Baekhyun feels someone near him and opens his eyes. “Ah… Jongin, you’re here. Is it lunch time already?”

Jongin touches Baekhyun’s face, and then his forehead. His expression freezes as he says: “Hyung, you’re burning up!”

“Ah… Oh… It’s fine. I always get sick.” Baekhyun waves him away, struggling to sit up. “I’m used to being sick. It’s okay!”

Seeing him so weak yet still insisting that he’s okay, Jongin helps prop him up. “Hyung, you better go home. I’ll take you home.”

“I don’t want to go home!” He pulls his arm back. “It’s so boring at home! I don’t want to go home. School is more fun. Chanyeol and Kyungsoo are so cute.”

Jongin asks himself: Should I be jealous? But it doesn’t seem like the right time for that. He bites his tongue and wastes no time in dragging Baekhyun towards the door, comforting him with: “Baekhyun hyung, it’s okay... How about I hang out with you at home? You should rest since you’re sick so tomorrow you can come back to school.”

“I don’t want…”

Jongin ignores Baekhyun’s protests and coaxes him gently but firmly out of his classroom.

Other students passing by have never seen Jongin look this compassionate, his expression so warm, melting his usual iciness. Then they look at Baekhyun in his arms, so unwilling and uncooperative, yet both looking incredibly in sync.

When they reach the school gates, it starts to rain.

Baekhyun weakly lets Jongin support him under the security office’s awning, thinking how melancholy everything seems. He wonders out loud: “Why do I feel like we’re in a drama right now?”

Jongin quietly glances at the ahjusshi in the security office. The man returns his look and hands him an umbrella from his drawer, saying: “Don’t break it, okay? Give it back tomorrow.”

Jongin bows to the ahjusshi carelessly. He looks at the pouring rain, and then at Baekhyun beside him, anticipating the long and difficult journey towards the subway stop.

He thinks for a moment and makes Baekhyun hold the umbrella, squatting in front of the older boy. Probably already delirious from his fever, Baekhyun just looks at Jongin with confused and moist eyes.

Jongin peers at Baekhyun who rarely looks puzzled, and at the security ahjusshi who has started watching them curiously. Scrunching his face, he awkwardly hoists Baekhyun on his back, and puts the umbrella in the older boy’s hand, saying: “Hyung, you hold the umbrella. I’ll carry you to the subway stop. Hold tight.”

Baekhyun holds the umbrella in a daze, covering both him and Jongin. He meekly rests his head on Jongin’s broad and supple back. The dancer lifts him up and walks down the steps slowly.

The raindrops fall on the ground, forming puddles, the air filled with the scent of moisture. On Jongin’s back, Baekhyun moves to rest his chin on the dancer’s shoulder, unconsciously adjusting his position.

“Hyung… you’re not holding the umbrella upright.” Jongin grumbles weakly. It’s completely skewed to the side now. He almost loses his balance because of the older boy not being able to keep still.

“Oh…” Baekhyun moves on his back again, the black umbrella held upright as it protects them from the rain.

Jongin’s lips curve up into a smile as he hoists Baekhyun slightly upward.

“Jongin-ah…” Baekhyun’s voice sounds muffled because of the rain. Jongin tries to listen closely and responds: “Hmm?”

“A long time ago… I didn’t know…”

“Ha?”

“I didn’t know that you were such a gentle person…” Baekhyun mumbles as he moves his head on Jongin’s shoulder. “But you always have your customary stony face on for everyone else…”

“I don’t…” Jongin thinks: I just don’t know how to express my emotions to others.

“But it’s alright…” Baekhyun say softly. “It’s okay… It’s enough that Jongin is gentle to me. To other people… it’s not important anymore…”

“Hmm?” Jongin wonders if he’s hearing things correctly.

Baekhyun doesn’t talk anymore no matter how many times Jongin asks him.
.
Is he asleep? But the umbrella is still upright, shielding us from the rain.

You’re really such a gentle person deep down.

Yes. Actually, hyung is the only person I want to be gentle to.
