Chapter 49
With regards to Luhan and Sehun’s problem, does it mean that only time can prove that Sehun’s feelings for Luhan is not just dependence born out of a young and crazy crush?
Baekhyun can’t help but admit that despite the things he said to comfort Jongin, Luhan’s uncertainties still affected him.
He’s not worried about his own relationship, but he is concerned about Sehun and Luhan.
Luhan is a hyung he’s very close with, and Sehun is a dongsaeng he likes very much. It’s impossible that he won’t be affected with what’s happening between them.
What will their future be?
Similar to Luhan, Baekhyun had thought that Sehun was just mesmerized by the older boy’s angelic looks. It never occurred to him that this would have that much of an impact on Sehun’s feelings.
Technically, he shouldn’t even be interfering since it’s their business, but it’s a classic case of ‘easy to say but hard to do’.
Baekhyun sighs again for the umpteenth time that morning, finally successfully attracting Chanyeol and Kyungsoo’s attention.
“What do you have to be depressed about?” Chanyeol shouts. People who are in relationships don’t understand the bitterness of being painfully single, okay?
Baekhyun looks sadly at his two clueless friends and thinks: Ignorance sure is bliss.
“Hypothetically speaking, if a dongsaeng who’s younger than you by four years tells you he likes you, would you believe that his feelings are real?” Baekhyun decides to ask his best friends’ opinions.
Chanyeol’s jaw drops dramatically: “Four years younger? 14 years old?? Someone who is just a freshman in junior high?”
Kyungsoo says sternly: “Baekhyun, why do you have this hypothetical situation? Don’t tell me you’ve been problematic lately because someone even younger is crushing on you?”
“Wow Baekhyun! You really attract the young ones, huh?” Chanyeol assumes this is really the reason and starts to get overexcited.
“No! That’s not it!” Baekhyun retorts in annoyance. “Can’t you just stick to the situation I gave you?”
Kyungsoo gives it a thought and shakes his head: “If it were me, I wouldn’t believe it. A freshman in junior high! What does a child in freshmen year know? Anyone normal would think that they’re just innocent children without a care in the world.”
Chanyeol agrees that he wouldn’t believe it too. “That’s just too young.”
“What if… you’re a freshman in college, and the other person is in third year of junior high?” Baekhyun realizes that the kid in his hypothetical situation really is too young so he changes it and continues his questioning.
“A third year in junior high?” Kyungsoo hesitates this time. “Well in that case, he can be considered as half an adult already right?”
“But if you’re already a freshman in university, then isn’t someone in junior high still too young? What separates them is not just a four year-gap, but also it spans across the boundaries between junior high, senior high, and university!” Chanyeol argues. “It’s not just an age problem, but an experience problem. Baekhyun, why are you really asking this?”
Baekhyun pretends that he doesn’t hear his question and retreats to his thoughts.
As expected, not just Luhan, but Kyungsoo and Chanyeol think the same way.
The four year gap, like what Chanyeol said earlier, is not just simply an age difference. The factors they consider and their perspectives on things would also be different, not to mention the rather strict sunbae-hoobae differences in Korea.
Take him and Jongin as an example. The reason why their case is different is because they only have two years and just one school level between them. Moreover, Jongin happens to be very laid-back about the whole sunbae-hoobae respect issue, add to that Baekhyun has a natural maknae face while Jongin looks more mature than his actual age.
There’s no doubt that Luhan looks very young, but so does Sehun with his baby face.
Could it be that one of the reasons behind Luhan’s uncertainties is that Sehun doesn’t make people feel he’s mature yet?
Feeling more uneasy the more he thinks about it, Baekhyun sends a text message to Junmyeon asking for updates, and then sends a text message to Jongin, telling him to accompany him to the junior high department later.
Anyway, what Sehun thinks about this whole mess is important too.
It's not difficult to find Oh Sehun, even if he's not in his classroom.
With that face so pretty and figure so striking that if he were in an idol group he’d probably be the visual, Sehun catches everyone’s attention wherever he goes.
Jongin and Baekhyun find the younger boy seated on a couch in the lower level of the library. Sehun has a book covering his face, limbs outstretched like he’s sleeping peacefully.
Jongin nudges him gently and removes the book, only to realize that he’s not asleep. Instead, he presses his eyes closed due to the sudden brightness. It’s a long while before he opens his tear-stained eyes again.
Baekhyun sees Sehun’s weary face and feels his chest tighten. He reaches his arm out and pulls the younger boy in for a hug.
Under the intense pressure from the look Jongin is giving him, Sehun jolts and comes to his senses.
“What are you two doing here?” Sehun asks, rubbings his puffy eyes
.
“If we don’t come for you, you’ll probably waste your life away in this couch.” Baekhyun says unhappily. He tugs on the younger boy’s collar and makes him sit up straight. “Since we’re here already, clear your head and tell us what happened.”
Chapter 50
Sitting at the junior high department’s cafeteria, Baekhyun realizes belatedly that they have made a poor choice.
He sees an increasing number of junior high students who shouldn’t even be eating at this hour around them. When he fixes his eyes on Sehun who looks out of sorts and Jongin who is silent as usual, he feels very gloomy.
He really doesn’t like this feeling of being watched and talked about from all sides!
“What happened between you two?”
Sehun doesn’t answer and just buries his face in his arm.
Jongin’s face darkens. In all the years he has known Sehun, he has never seen him this depressed.
The Sehun he knows is always smiling with his crescent eyes, mind brimming with ideas. Everyone in their little group is used to running to Sehun for solutions to their problems. None of them can imagine that Sehun would be like this.
But he doesn’t know what to do.
He doesn’t know what to say to comfort his heartbroken best friend. He can only look at Sehun silently, face full of helplessness, unable to say that he feels for what he’s going through, words of comfort stuck in his throat.
It’s a good thing that he has Baekhyun.
Baekhyun gives Jongin a look and then moves to sit next to Sehun, patting his back.
“Sehun-ah, since you don’t want to talk, just listen to hyung okay?” Baekhyun’s voice is very gentle, so gentle that even if Jongin knows how much Sehun needs comfort and guidance right now, he still feels slightly resentful.
Sehun doesn’t move but Baekhyun knows that he’s listening.
“Sehun-ah, there are questions you just shouldn’t ask, such as when you asked Luhan hyung who he likes more between you and Jongin.” Baekhyun takes a moment to organize his thoughts. “It’s like asking me who I like more between you and Jongin. You must know that you two are different.”
“I like Sehun because you’re a cute and wonderful dongsaeng. And I like Jongin…” Baekhyun glances at Jongin who’s staring at him and feels a blush coming on. “I like Jongin… probably the same way as how you like your Luhan hyung.”
“Two different kinds of feelings cannot be compared against each other. Do you understand, Sehun?”
Sehun lifts his head and says very dejectedly: “Baekhyun hyung, I understand. I was just… in the heat of the moment…”
Baekhyun reaches out to touch Sehun’s hair gently. He smiles and continues: “Hyung understands. I’m sure Luhan hyung understands too. He just said he likes Jongin more out of spite because you doubt him.”
Sehun looks like he’s sighing out of relief.
Noticing that the younger boy doesn’t look as stubborn as before, Baekhyun continues: “What we’re going to talk about next is… why did you feel, using your own words, that Luhan hyung ‘doesn’t want you anymore’?”
When Sehun hears this, he looks at the older boy with a steady gaze.
Baekhyun thinks: ‘Luhan hyung, you should really be here to see Sehun’s expression. If you see this, you won’t be able to say that he’s not clear about his own feelings!
Taking a deep breath, Baekhyun feels that after knowing these two dongsaengs, he has really become the ‘counsellor-sunbaenim’.
“Sehun, you’re born in 1994, right?”
Sehun nods, not sure where this conversation is going.
“Luhan hyung is born in 1990. Your birthdays are both in April, so Luhan hyung is really four years older than you, right?
Sehun nods again.
“Sehun-ah, don’t you know that for Luhan hyung, you really are too young, so young that even if Luhan hyung just treats you as his dongsaeng, it’s completely understandable?”
Sehun doesn’t speak.
“But obviously, Luhan hyung doesn’t merely treat you like a 16 year old-dongsaeng. He really likes you. But…” Baekhyun stops, pretending not to see Sehun’s face lighting up with joy. “But Sehun, you’re only 16, and it’s not just an age problem…”
“It’s an experience problem.”
“The difference between junior high and university is really something you can’t imagine yet. It’s a generation gap between someone who hasn’t experienced senior high yet and someone who already has. Anyone knows that senior high is a crucial period where everyone grows up. Be it lifelong friendships or relationships, most are formed during senior high. And you, you’re still in junior high.”
“Baekhyun hyung, I…” Sehun rushes to counter but Baekhyun interrupts him.
“Sehun, I know what you want to say. No one doubts your sincerity. But Luhan hyung is just uncertain. Whether or not he likes you, he just can’t easily trust a promise of commitment from a child four years younger than him. The future’s too unpredictable. Do you understand what I mean?
Sehun nods.
He’s a smart person. How can he not understand what Baekhyun is saying? He has just been living in denial.
But now, circumstances have forced him to have no choice but to think about the impermanency of things.
“Sehun, I’m sure you know this. But it’s not enough that you know. To put it frankly, to Luhan hyung who’s older than you by four years, who has had more life experience than you, how can you expect him to just take your word for it?”
Baekhyun thinks talking to Sehun is very easy and convenient because the younger boy is smart, not only in IQ but also in his comprehension and rationalization.
He’s completely different from Kim Jongin, this dumb boy.
Unfortunately, he has already fallen for said dumb boy.
He takes a deep breath and continues: “Sehun, actually, ‘forever’ is the emptiest word. As for ‘commitment’, once you say it, are you confident that you can completely deliver on what that word represents for your Luhan hyung?”
