I'm in holiday season crazy land lately. I'm mostly hiding from people during my days off. Dogs and cats make great company!
While doing today's bit of hiding, I also searched the interwebs for whatever caught my fancy.
This short article about the split of a popular pair of gay penguins caught my eye.
While I'm sure the situation is not hilarious for poor Roy, the penguin whose partner, Silo, left him and their adopted chick in favor of the new bird in town, it did make me smile. Why? Am I really so cruel as to take pleasure from the antics of avian nestwreckers? Yup! I mean, how cool is it to observe such human-like behavior in such distantly related animals as birds? It's kind of comforting and reassuring. We last shared a common ancestor with Roy and Silo back when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Yet here we are, 65 million odd years later, and both camps are still squabbling over slutty Mc-so-and-so swooping in to steal a mate. I get a little tickle out of the fact that, when it comes to relationships, we are all birds of a feather.
