Once again, in the face of failure Slater tries to bring back something of value. Instead he brings me Tad Ryerstad, an escaped convict and loose cannon of a boy trying to me a super man. I could have just had him put away for good, but I wanted to know what he knew. Slater left a detailed report about the Kupperburg failure on my desk before he left for the infirmary. The Assassin was so well prepared that either Slater surprised him before the job, or he was tipped off to Slater's involvement. I haven't decided yet which to think, or if Ryerstad had anything to do with it. Ryerstad's involvement bought himself one white bracelet that he gets to wear around his wrist until I sort it out.
I've talked to Checkmate's Psychological Operations Division to discuss Slater and his mental conditioning. They think he is trying to use passive agressive means in which to break the conditioning. By denying verbal communication, he is trying to force a confrontation over an order that should be easier for him to disobey, thereby reversing the conditioning. Slater knows too much to be off the hook, and I need him too much to just have him killed. CPOD advised to give Slater no reason to have to say anything and avoid confrontation.. I let him go to the infirmary to have himself checked out. After every mission he gets a medical examination because his abilities can lead to injuries that he can not heal and may not know about. If a bullet lodges itself against his rib it will still heal. Repairing the bullet wound and ignoring the pain doesn't make it go away. If the bullet is not removed, it could cause an infection. I got a good look at his eyes before he left, they were tired again...tired and disappointed.
Luthor is also keeping me abreast of his new ideas reguarding police powers for metahuman vigilantes. It surprise so much that he wants to give something to the people who have been hounding him for years. There is a catch there somewhere, but he has been too vocal about it to just be a political bubble test. His statements about the Metropolis incident with the Golden Ram have replayed on every news channel. He hasn't asked for my input on the matter, but I am sure he'll come soon. Then I will find out first hand what he is planning. Depending on what I read, a soft copy may find itself in a certain computer file unused in several years.
