First Week on the Job

Apr 24, 2010 10:58

Well, the first week of my new job has ended, And let me tell you it is VERY demanding. There are some moments where I can't help but think how much I love my new job, but there are other moments when it just makes me want to cry. Wednesday night I shed a few tears. It's a salary paid job, and I'm expected to put in 50 to 60 hours a week. This includes staying late to finish a work load I don't complete, meeting with clients and candidates, and going to - get this - required company happy hours. Yes, they are paying me to drink.

My favorite part thus far includes searching for candidates. I love finding people and matching them to the job descriptions. We have to do whatever it takes to find candidates to fit a job description and are expected to use every tool the internet offers to find qualified people..

I'm doing a lot of things a literary agent would do in this job. I'm more or less an agent for every candidate. A technology agent, if you will. Maybe with enough experience here, and a little lesson in being less empathetic, I will be able to be an agent one day? Just a thought.
