Once upon about two years ago, I was writing nearly every day. I had three novels in the works and was at least 80,000 words into one of them. Everything was going just dandy until my DC power adapter snapped off. The male part decided it was nice and cozy inside the female part and the connection from my laptop to its charger was lost. Of course, I didn't realize this until my laptop ran out of battery power and I lost access to my hardrive, where my documents are stored to this very day.
Why didn't I try to get my documents back? The three year warranty was up and when I came home from work three days later, I found a brand new desktop computer on the kitchen floor - my dad's last christmas gift to me. It goes without saying that I lot of life has happened between now and then. Destin and I started dating. I got I new job. My dad died. I moved out. I had a lot of panic attacks. We lost our apartment. I moved back with my mom and brother. Let's just say, writing would have been difficult either way, but losing all my work has been probably the hardest blow. I lost a lot of incentive.
I was trying to write today, staring blankly at my computer screen as I find myself so often doing since I lost my mojo. I had an epiphany! I was alone in the house and felt the sudden urge to run into Dad's old workroom. Sometimes I just like being there and surrounding myself with all his tools and unfinished projects. Do I know how to use any of them? No, but I feel closer to him somehow. I was sorting through his screwdrivers when I saw my old laptop. It was that moment that I realized I still had another chance. My documents weren't gone forever, I just needed to figure out how to get them back.
After a little online research and a talk with a nice guy at RadioShack I found out I have four options!
(1) Pay the friendly Geek Squad at Best Buy $160 to retrieve the files for me.
(2) Find somebody else with a laptop that uses the same battery as mine and "borrow" it to get the files then give it back to its owner.
(3) Do something involving an external hardrive and my laptop's hardrive.
(4) Take it to a computer repair shop and have them replace the broken part for a price that's probably cheaper than Best Buy's offer.
I think I'm going to try option # 4 first. I found a couple hole the wall shops in the area and tomorrow I plan on going to both and comparing prices. I'll also take a trip to Best Buy to see if RadioShackguy's price estimate was correct. Bottom line is I'm getting my work back and putting myself one step closer to pursuing my dream. I refuse to let my degree go to waste, and I plan to conquer any discouragement I may find along the way.
That is all.
