My new recent annoyance with the world is the overuse of the word nerd. Suddenly its cool to call yourself a nerd and I don't get it. I don't think its a bad thing to be a nerd by any means. Some of my best friends are HUGE nerds. However if you aren't one then don't take some wonderful pride in calling yourself one. Just because you like Lord of the Rings doesn't make you one. Just because you like computers and speak a few programming languages doesn't make you one. Just because you occasionally play War Craft doesn't mean you are a nerd. Just because you like science or math doesn't... well I think you get the point. The list could go on forever of nerdly things that don't necessarily make you a nerd. You have to have multiple levels of this in order to qualify. For example if you were nodding along with every one of those statementes- yeah okay you're a nerd. Furthermore you shouldn't just like warcraft. You should actually plan life around your warcraft raids (or whatever they are called?). You can't just like Lord of the Rings you should be able to speak their language (they have one of those right?) or know their history better than your own country's, be able to draw maps of it ect.... I also think there should be a certain level of lack of social competency to qualify. If you can easily handle yourself in groups of "normal" people AND those "normal" people don't automatically think "hey there's something a little off with this person" than odds are you aren't really a nerd.
I think a lot of people have no understanding of true nerdliness. There's been so many times when I wanted to argue with people who call themselves this and say- "no come with me, and I will take you to a party where you can see some REAL nerds and then you will stop calling yourself one." I have no problem with nerds and I have no problem with "not" nerds I just wish people would accept who they are and stop trying to make themselves seem different and exciting by applying random terms to themselves.
