I wanna preface this by saying I dont want to get into a pissing contest with anybody - I'm posting this for purely educational reasons only...
Is anybody on here Seven Day Adventist? If not, do any of you guys know anything about it? and more particular, the teachings behind the book National Sunday Law (
http://www.seventh-day.org/Read_NSL.htm).
Jonny grew up SDA....but he went away from the church. I grew up Baptist but in the past several years have been attending a methodist church. We both agreed that we would raise our kids Methodist.
Apparently, Jonny still believes some things that are way way off the wall to me. I dont blame him, I dont expect him to change the beliefs that he grew up with. It's just - he gave me the impression that he was so sickened by SDA that he had completely turned from it, and I guess it finally came out that there are some things he still believes in.
I thought most religions were similar, but this one thing caught me by surprise. I guess I just really want to be educated so that way I'm not knocked off my feet next time somethign crazy comes up that I wasnt expecting.
FYI: the "thing" is that unlike most protestant religions, he doesnt believe when you die that your spirit goes to heaven or hell. It just sits in limbo, with your buried body, until Jesus comes back. He says that there's a verse in revelations that talks about jesus coming back and the dead rising for the groundwork of this belief.
It caught me offguard - cause it's...unsettling. I mean, I've always lived my life trying to be a good person, knowing that my passed on loved ones are looking over me from above....and he says he doesnt believe that. It just strikes me as odd. We talked about it and I told him I didnt want to confuse the kids while they were growing up - that if we were going to raise them methodist, then thats the beliefs we need to raise them with. But I also told him that once they were old enough to think for themselves, if he wanted to educate them on his beliefs, that was okay too.
That book - National Sunday Law....floors me. I havent read the whole thing yet - just skimmed it, and it's quite terrifying actually. It sounds like someone is convinved about another darn conspiracy theory and it just makes me want to roll my eyes.
Apparently, according to that book, the Pope is 666 himself. I'm not even catholic, so I dont really care about what the Pope does...
okay, ending this here before I make someone mad. If anybody knows anything, or can help me understand a little bit better, I'd appreciate it. I think I'm going to read the book and perhaps meet with my pastor to see if he can help me understand, or at least know what to say in response if Jonny, or his parents try to put me on the spot with something that I think is wrong...
