Yup, it seems one of the logical choices for someone like Hermione, doesn't it?
OTOH, it would be only very human of her to decide not to take such drastic measures, in the hopes that something would work out in the end. It is basically the same where her choice is between getting married or leaving the wizarding world - I imagine magic would be to her almost like a sixth sense, the decision to leave it behind would not be easier than to pluck out her eyes or, as in this case, to undergo hysterectomy.
About women's role in WW, most Marriage Law fics tend to go the way that it is the same as in the real world in the past, but the books seem to indicate that there is much more equality - there are women on high positions; there have been women headmistresses even several hundred years ago when in the real world it would have been unimaginable. So although in many things the Wizarding World seems archaic, in this it's not quite *that* archaic. There may be archaic traits, but it's not the same as in our world.
But the general attitude of most of the WW in Marriage Law fics, including yours, is very well portrayed by the sentence from your story: "Ronald Weasley is tripping over himself to marry you, Binding or no." When she snorted, he shook his head. "But instead, you do this." It's a blessing for every witch to be *wanted* by a (GASP!) wizard and nobody even *thinks* to ask what the witch wants. In this, your fic fits nicely into that challenge, I think.
But I liked your Hermione. She certainly has the courage - and cleverness, as well as pride in her own cleverness, just like she has in OotP.
Thanks. To be fair, I have rwad more than several WW fics in which women do have equal rights. It is the few I have read (and cammot for the life of me remember the names of now, dammit!) in which Imperio and Crucio are integrated into the binding that made me think of this. Perhaps it was Cloak of Courage, or Hinge of Fate, I don't remember. Then again, I read a great many over the past week.
This is not to say that I didn't like those stories, but I thought that there had to be an alternative to that particular set up. Like I sad in the end, one has to first buy into the idea that the Ministry would pass such a law.
As far as marrying Ron, I've always thought of itin the sense that the marriage would be convenient for them both as far as the law is concerned, but that Ron might be a little more ken on the idea than Hermione. Or that Hermione would agree to such an arrangement out of practicality, but would come to regret it for her own reasons, and not because Weasley is a git to her or anything.
