I don't usually do these.
I like funny. And I mean, I like snappy dialogue. A great deal of people think they write snappy dialogue, but they fail. If you are a snappy dialogue writer, srsly, go nuts. If you are not, and want to give it a whirl, I can't fault you for trying. Something about GI Joe and half the battle. Who writes snappy dialogue? Joss Whedon. The people who write Weeds. Anyone who writes Pam and Jim's dialogue on The Office. Occasionally Aaron Sorkin. Whoever thought up Keen Eddie. Ben Edlund, creator and writer for The Tick and writer for Firefly.
Anyway. I like sad, and I like things that have no plot. I also like plots, if you want to put one of those in, but don't strain yourself.
I like well placed words. I like haiku. I like complex metaphor. I like fic that is effortless.
For the specific fandoms.
Ghost in the Shell: SAC:
I like anything in the GITS:SAC world. My favs are Batou, Saito (and his story about how he lost his eye, omg) and Motoko, but I have special love for the Tachikomas and Togusa as well. I love that the Tachikomas are curious and innocent and looking for the meaning of consciousness. I love that Togusa won't get cybernetics. I love that Batou has a basset hound (his dream about explaining the death of the dog to his nonexistent son. Ando, omg.) I love the ghost box, the laughing man, the particularist eleven. I adored Kuse and his quest, the refugees and this whole idea of saving their consciousness/existence on the net. I love the idea of "dolls". And omg folding paper cranes. The AI that follows Togusa home from the mansion and buys him stocks without him knowing it. The viral nature of the Laughing Man.
FLCL aka Fooly Cooly: I said: "Atomsk, Haruhara Haruko, Nandaba Naota, Samejima Mamimi. I like stylistically experimental things. Sparse narrative POV and dialogue."
I think the reason I fell in love with FLCL was the narration. The scene just before Haruko hits the robot, and Naota says, "In that moment, she looked like my brother." Mamimi's cigarette with "er knows best" on it. The Canti with wings by the burned out school house when the Pillow's 'Hybrid Rainbow' is playing. THOSE EYEBROWS. Stuff like that. If you know the anime, you know what I'm talking about. Haruko/Naota ust would be great, but no graphic chan, please. That said, I read so little FLCL fic that anything would be a treat.
Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series:
I stopped reading after…The Storm Front series, so all that stuff with Albreich and Myste will be completely lost to me, but anything before that is gravy. OMG I love anyone from the Arrows of the Queen series, The Last Herald Mage, or the bad ass Storm Front series (Karal FTW.) I also love FIRESONG TO EFFING BITS. EFFING BITS.
