conundrum

A Torchwood employee loses a leg in the line of duty. I'm thinking above the knee.

Should they be forced to retire?

I should probably mention this is post Coe, so there is no tourist office to be manned.

Do they have a piece of alien equipment in the basement that would fix/replace said leg?

Let's say no.

Oh TW London would take old yeller out to the shed and kill them.

I dunno, I feel like, given the office-y nature of the London environment, they might be able to get away with shunting them down into the mail room or something.

Talking Cardiff, I think it would depend on how big the staff is at the time. If there are enough people to allow for them to stay Hub-bound, I think they could get away with keeping their job. I mean, logically, they really shouldn't be putting their entire team out in the field all the time anyway, but since when does Torchwood hold with logic?

(Also, I think it depends on whose in charge. Jack or Gwen would be much more likely to suggest a desk job then some of the past leaders.)

Yeah, I just think that no matter how well-intentioned, the desk job at the hub would come with some risk. look at how often they had issues on site (thought some of them were from in house), that even the person who stays behind should be what they wold consider "able bodied". It's not to say that a person with a prosthetic leg can't be able bodies, but I'm wondering what the policy might be.

It would also depend on who that person was. You know it would.

Yes. Just like a soldier or a police officer or a fireman would be removed from active duty/put on disability/discharged.

The job is too risky.

Not even if they got a prosthetic and...got a desk job? Is there a desk job at the Hub?

Well, you're question sort of answers that. There is no safe desk job at T'wood. Even setting aside the self-generated Hub based crisis, there was Adam (and why would the self-generated drama stop or exclude a disabled employee anyway)?

Torchwood isn't a civilian enviroment, or a safe or sane one. I think having someone who can't run away easily or quickly would be a real problem -- and put that person at serious risk.

*I say all this even though I have a AU vignette scene with one member who has a missing limb. LOL -- I'm so precious.

Yeah, I'm of the mind that if it was Jack, he'd do the benching (firing), not just because of the risk the person presents to themselves and others, but because Jack, old softie that he is, would see that as a sign that they should quit. Like, "you've paid a big price, and I can't ask you to pay more."

Enforced desk duty, at the very least. No retcon except under extreme circumstances; dealing with a missing limb is going to be hard enough even without amnesia.

I think this whole "retconning anyone who leaves tw" is bullshit anyway. and now that it's the 21st century, it's virtually unnecessary anyway.

Unless they have advanced prosthetics, it'd probably desk duty. Though if they suffered from depression of losing said knee they might not be fit for desk duty either. Forced convalescence until they're fit enough to do desk duty? :/

If this was Transformers, they'd get a nifty exo-skeleton and then their family would go out and try to destroy the entire world. But it's not. So....
