Shelter from the Rain

By the time Lex looked up from the files on his desk it was eight o’clock and the telephone was ringing. It had taken him some time to clear his thoughts of the new cases and refocus on the other cases.

“Lex Luthor speaking.”

“Lex, where are you? My dinner won’t wait forever you know,” Gillian Perry scolded her always late boyfriend over the phone. “Besides I know of a couple of men who would love to be in your place right. Me, waiting over a hot stove cooking for you and you haven’t even left your office.”

Laughing, Lex teasing responded, “As I recalled you haven’t cooked a day in your life and your cook Flora will be really pissed that you are passing her cooking off as yours.”

“Well, I did tell her to cook all your favorites.”

“Enough already, I believe we’ve this conversation a million times. Look I’m sorry for ruining your dinner. Why don’t you go ahead and eat without me. We’ll do dinner another time.”

“We will do no such thing. I haven’t seen you at all this week. Plus I have on a new dress that I brought just for your eyes only. So get yourself over here and be careful.”

Lex replaced the receiver and immediately began preparing to leave the office. He filled his Italian leather briefcase with folders that had to be read before morning. Checking his desk, He was confident that he had everything that he would need tonight. He pushed from his chair standing. A quick survey of the street below told him just how late it was to be downtown. There wasn’t a car in sight. Just then a bolt of lightning illuminated the sky. A clap of thunder soon followed. Lex jumped reflexively. Delaying no longer he left the office for the parking garage below.

Lex stepped off the elevator with keys in hand as another bolt of lighting ripped across the sky. Dreading the pending storm, he wished that he had told Gillian that he wasn’t coming to dinner tonight. He quicken his pace. Downtown parking lot was dangerous especially at night when all the security guards were gone home for the night. He approached his silver Porsche and noticed three well dressed men involved in a heated discussion, two lanes over. Their voices couldn’t be heard clearly, but their hand gestures and body language spoke of their anger. Sensing trouble he hurried to his car. Just as he closed the door and turn of the ignition, a gunshot rang out throughout the whole garage.

Lex glanced in the direction of the three men. Blood covered the chest and hands of one man. The man soon crumpled to the ground and out of sight. When the two remaining men glance in Lex direction and aimed their weapons, all of a sudden white with lighting, then completely dark as the storm took out the city lights.

Lex didn’t wait to see if the lights would come back on. He seized the opportunity and threw his car in gear. The car jumped with the pressure of him slamming hard on the gas petal. The headlights temporarily blinded the gunmen, as ties squeal and burned. He drove his car down the winding exit ramp into the deserted street. Thinking quickly, he turned left and then right off 20th Street to the police station. Of the entire city the police station was the only building that still had lights on. The rain started to fall as he got out of his car.

“I’m Lex Luthor and I would like to report a shooting,” he hurriedly spoke as he approached the on duty desk sergeant. Professionally recounting the details of the shooting, He waited as the desk sergeant informed dispatch to see a patrol car to the location.

“Sir if you would return to the scene with Officer Powers here,” He pointed to a big man, “he’ll take down a description of the suspects.”

Reluctantly, Lex agreed to go with Officer Powers and his partner back to the scene and out into the raging storm. Climbing into the backseat of the patrol car Lex tried to steady his nerves as he inhaled deeply through his nose. He silently watched as they passed block after block of downtown buildings in the blinding rain. His hands were tightly clinched to control the trembling. As serval flashing police lights came into view, Lex prepared himself for the scene above. He grew more tenser as they reached the fifth level, their destination.

Lex was left alone in the car while both officers walked over to the crime scene. Headlights were used as temporary lighting. He cringed as the coroner opened the door of the van and retrieved a gurney.

“Detective Clark Kent,” the new arrival introduce himself to the police on the scene. He displayed a gold detective’s shield and assumed the command of the investigation. He gathered all the necessary information from the police before heading over to examine the crime scene and the body. The forensic guys were busy going through their routine. They took a moment to detail their initial findings to the detective. A seasoned detective with ten years of police experience, it is Kent’s dedication to the law and order that has earned him the respect of the community as well as his fellow officers.

“Where’s our witness?” he questioned the uniform officers on the scene.

One of the officers motioned toward the car at the end of the procession of the police vehicles. “The man’s name is Lex Luthor.”

“Thanks,” Clark said before heading toward the car. He wanted to interview this witness right away while the details were still fresh in his mind. Luthor? He didn’t know why the name seemed familar. Then he placed it. LuthorCorp was the company who founder was the scum of the earth and his only son was just as crooked as his father, blamed the cops for the ills of world. If he remembered correctly he had been married to his former girlfriend Lana Lang. He didn’t know which one he felt sorriest for. Armed with this knowledge, he pulled the back door open and peered into the back seat.

Clark was rooted in place as black silken pants legs swung through the open door and lowered to the ground. His eyes helplessly trailed up the black pants to open flesh of the palest skin he had seen in a long time. Forcing himself to look away from the incredible pale skin to his witness’ eyes. Clark was unprepared by the force of his immediate attraction.

A deep set blue eyes in a soft round face returned his curious stare from a veil of no hair whatsoever on his head. Then Clark looked at his mouth a notice a small scar over his top lip only you had to be very up close to notice it. Clark wondered how anyone could hurt him.

Lex silently watched the detective growing more curious by the monent. Why was he staring at him? Did he suspect his of the crime because he was a Luthor? Defiant, he boldly returned the stare and soon discovered himself cataloging his attributes. He was tall and suprisingly handsome with a solid build. As best he could tell in the poor lighting, his complexion was more almond than red or pale and his dark hair fell thick in waves. Broad shoulders and narrow in the waist, he wore his clothes well. The black knit shirt stretched provocatively across the breath of his chest should have been outlawed, and the form -fitting black jeans, banned permanently from public display. The leather holster slung across his mountainous shoulders held a deadly weapon. The sight alone of the man was menacing and intimidating. Lex glanced into his green eyes and knew immediately he had made a mistake. They had focused hotly onto his and challenged him. A little unsettled by their interest and stunned by the effect, he quickly looked away and caught sight of the black bagged body being placed in the rear of the coroner's van.

"Mr. Luthor, your name proceeds you."

Lex's blue eyes harden with suspicion. "Is there a problem?" His hand movement indicated that he was waiting for a name.

"I'm Detective Clark Kent." He extended a hand in introduction.

Lex nervously accepted the offered handshake. "Detective."

Clark felt a slight tremor in his touch. "Are you up for this?"

Lex heard concern in his voice and couldn't help but look into his eyes. They had soften with worry. He forced a smile. "Yes, I'm fine." He jumped quickly from a clap of thunder and lighting. Recovering, He quickly removed his hand.

Clark didn't believe him. He was jumpy as a cat. But need the information the only Lex could provide, and knowing that it was best to interview him now that later, he pressed on. "What time did you enter the garage?" He listened closely while watching his sensual mouth.

"It was a little after eight o'clock, no later than eight fifteen he responded noticing how his dark brow enhanced the intensity and beauty of his green eyes. He folded his arm and asked himself what devil he was thinking ogling this cop.

“How can you be so sure of the time?” Clark wondered if his mouth tasted as good as it looked.

“I was late for dinner and checked the clock as I locked up my office.”

Clark frowned, suddenly unhappy with the though of someone else kissing those lips tonight. “Well tell me all that you saw.” Clark listened closely as Lex’s voice recalled the details. He scribble down the detailed notes as he listened. When Lex finally concluded speaking he was weak with a incredible compulsion to ask Lex out on a date. What are you thinking?

Lex missed the frown because he was to busy watching Clark’s hands. They were large and well maintained, and he foolishly wondered what they would feel like caressing his flesh. Uncomfortable with this newly discovered attraction he nervously ground his right foot into the pavement, oblivious to his green eyes drawn to the sudden movement.

“Do you believe those men will come looking for me?”

“They’re probably long gone by now?” he tired to reassure Lex, then wondered why he cared.

Clark soon announced his questioning over, then promptly cleared away any sexual thoughts of the man standing before him. He was poor and Lex was rich and their paths would probably never cross again.
