Rick's birthday was last Saturday so I threw a cookout party for him. I planned it weeks in advance, invited several people, most of which cancelled. So it turned out to be basically a family gathering, which Rick and I wanted to avoid to begin with, for reasons I will explain in a bit.
I had tons of leftover food, which my sister-in-law pounced on and proceeded to take it upon herself to prepare a couple of plates to take home. Side note: my sis-in-law was not originally invited by proxy of her kid because we specified that it was an adult party. She showed up anyway with her hubby (mil babysat, thank god). Her hubby sat in my living room the entire evening and watched baseball while she stirred up shit...oops, I mean, family drama. I was being very cautious of what I said, but Sally was eager to throw her 2 cents worth in. The following day, my house phone and Rick's cell phone were practically glowing red from the calls, mainly from Rick's mom. I wanted to smack Rick's sister upside the head. I really, really, really did. Still do.
In the meantime, Rick's dad fell asleep sitting in his chair. So that left the uncle under the stairs and Rick's other brother. Not exactly scintillating conversation.
I was disappointed because the one person (my so-called best friend) whom I had invited didn't even bother to call. When Rick called her and her hubby (Rick's boss), they said they were sick and had called us and left a message. Yeah, right. I didn't get any frikkin messages. My friend called me later in the evening and made her excuses but I knew they were just that, sorry at that. I mean come on, I've known her for about 13 years and I know when she's lying. I could tell Rick was a bit disappointed too, but he never said anything but thank you to me. What a sweet man. God I love him! My intention was to give my hubby a "special" night after our guests had left but we were both so exhausted that by midnight we were both sound asleep.
We both decided that next year we're going to do our own thing. A night on the town or getting rid of the kids for the night and staying home, whatever it might be, it'll be just the two of us. We'll create our own drama...ha!
