Ueda found himself sitting in Sho’s office once again. He was sitting in the armchair with a glass of blood. Sho had remembered that Ueda didn’t drink human blood, and had slaughtered a goat for him.
Sho was sitting beside Ueda, holding another glass with blood, but he didn’t drink it. He was looking in Ueda’s direction, but his eyes were looking past him. They were looking at something which wasn’t there.
Ueda didn’t know if he should break the silence, since the other vampire seemed to be occupied with his thoughts.
“Sir?”
Other than an eyebrow twitch, Sho didn’t move.
“My Lord?”
Sho closed his eyes and sighted, seconds passed before he looked Ueda directly in the eyes.
He didn’t say anything, so Ueda took it, as he should continue.
“Why have you summoned me again?”
Sho placed the wineglass on the small table and folded his hands, over his crossed legs.
“Tell me, Tatsuya: why can there never be peace?”
Ueda looked confused at the Lord, “I’m sorry?”
“Why is it, that there’s always someone, who wants to go to war, always someone who’s hurt or injured. Is this our species curse, that we’ll never be able to have peace?”
“I’m not sure what to say, my Lord.”
Sho waved his hand towards Ueda, “don’t think about it, it’s none of your concern.”
“My Lord, why did you summon me today?”
Sho leaned forward so he and Ueda were almost touching each other, “first you must promise me this: what is said in this room never leaves the room. Understood?”
Ueda nodded.
“Good, now: read this.” Sho gave him an envelope; Ueda cautiously opened and read it.
After reading it, he looked up at Sho, with mixed emotions of disbelief and shock.
“Whom did you get this from? Do the other Lords know about this?”
“No, the letter was already here, when I came and I have not talked to anyone else about it.”
Ueda looked down at the letter, “there is not name on it, and do you have any idea of who might have sent it?”
“No.”
“Are you going to accept it?”
“Accept what? The challenge or the fact that I have received this letter?”
Ueda didn’t say anything, even though they were standing in a lot of trouble, Sho still couldn’t keep his sarcasm away.
Sho continued, “Yes… I have to choice but to accept it, but I fear that we need to keep this a secret, between you and me.”
“Are you then, going to meet them?”
“Of course not! I’ll send my best warriors to deal with this problem; Takashi will be the one to lead the team.”
“Do you want me, to join them?”
“No, you are too precious to me; you are like an adopted son to me.”
Ueda tried to hide the sarcastic grin on his face. Sho had been good to him, but He just wasn’t the ‘father type’ figure.
“Then what do you want me to do?”
“Nothing, for now. But I wanted you to know, the situation we are in. I’m going to assign a new member to your scout team, so you won’t be outnumbered, if something happens.”
“Won’t the other Lords be suspicious, when you send a group of vampires out, without their consent?”
“Leave that to me, go home and tell no one about it. If your dog friend is good at keeping secrets, he can know it too.”
Ueda left without another word, leaving Sho in his own thoughts.
**********
Shortly after Ueda had left, a knock was heard on the door.
Sho groaned and said, “Come in”
One of his guards stepped inside and bowed, “My Lord.”
“What is it?”
“The other Lords have assembled a meeting, it will be starting in a few minutes, and your presence is required.”
“Indeed,” Sho nodded and stood up.
He followed the guard out and closed the door behind him. Sho then turned left and walked down a long dark corridor, with candles lightning up the way.
He came to an old wooden door, before he opened it; Sho checked that his clothes were sitting as they should, running a hand through his hair, and stepped into the room.
There was nothing in the room, except for a long table with five chairs around it; wine glasses were neatly placed in front of each chair, a chandelier hung above the table, illuminating the four figures sitting underneath it.
Sho walked over to the empty seat and sat down.
To his right sat Hachi Masaki, to his left sat Taki Tsukey; on the opposite side of the table sat the two wolf Lords: Ryo Nishikido and Kishiro No.
Without anyone exchanging words, two servants entered the room and filled the vampire’s glasses with blood, and the wolf’s glasses with wine. The servants left quickly after.
Sho was about a thousand years old, but Taki and Hachi were much older. Ryo and Kishiro were the younger ones of the council, but they had already a lot of experience.

Taki took a sip of his glass and smiled, “Still warm…”
He looked at Hachi and Sho and indicated for them to drink too, “Drink my friends, while it’s still warm.”
Hachi drank the blood without saying anything; Sho took his own glass but didn’t drink it.
“Where do you get your rations from?”
Taki smiled, “I have some good suppliers, who deliver the goods once every month. This supply just came in, fresh.”
Hachi smiled, showing his bloody fangs, “What’s with the serious face, Hagashi Sho, is human blood no longer a taste of yours?”
Sho pressed a restrained smile out and replied, “No, but I were just curious.”
He drank the blood and felt it settle in his stomach, calming his nerves a bit.
Taki looked over to the wolf’s, “Don’t worry, I’ve given you wine, a very good quality too.”
Kishiro took a sip of the wine, and nodded in approval.
Ryo didn’t touch his glass, but smiled as an answer.
Sho was starting to notice, that Taki saw himself as the leader of the council; he were both powerful, old and strong, so no one were foolish enough to challenge him.
Taki looked over at Sho, “why are you taking out a scout team tomorrow? There’s already assigned a team.”
Sho tried not to sound surprised, he had no idea on how Taki and the others could know about it already.
He put up a mask and said with a calm voice, “That’s my own business; it’s my men I’m sending out, not yours.”
Hachi interrupted, “Your men or not, we need to know what you are doing, it could maybe jeopardize and worsen the whole situation that we’re already in. We need to discuss these sorts of matters, together.”
Ryo and Kishiro nodded in agreement.
Sho sighted, “I’ve hear rumors about a place, a vampire territory, where they sell illegal drugs. I didn’t think it would be such a big deal, so I would take care of the problem myself.”
“So you don’t believe it’s a big threat?” Asked Kishiro.
“I don’t think it’s a big problem, Lord Kishiro. I would spare you the details and solve the problem myself.”
Kishiro nodded, “Your reason is accepted.”
Taki opened his mouth to protest, but Kishiro interrupted him, “If you can handle this matter on your own, Lord Hagashi, then I believe there’s nothing else to discuss.”
The Lords stood up in union and bowed to each other.
Kishiro turned to Taki, “it’s an excellent wine you have, Lord Tsukey, I would be pleased if you would trade some bottles.”
Taki tried to hide his irritation about the situation, but hid it behind a fake smile “I’ll send some boxes over, consider it as a gift from me.”
Kishiro smiled, “That would be wonderful!”
The Lords left without another word.
***********
Takashi stood with 19 other vampires, on a baseball field.
The sun had vanished behind the mountains long ago, only the field lamps were lighting up the field.
Takashi held his sword in the right hand, ready to use it.
The vampire closest to him, Kohei, looked and smiled at Takashi.
“It seems like it’s going to be a long night.”
Takashi laughed, “and a bloody one too.”
“Let’s hope not. Our job was to come here, to investigate and figure out what was going on here.”
Takashi raised his sword, “That might be true, but these fellows aren’t here to chat.”
Kohei pulled out his own sword and turned.
Out of nowhere, a crowd of both vampire and wolfs came out of the shadows.
The vampires in the middle formed a big circle in defense, just as the newcomers moved closer.
Kohei gritted his teeth in a small grin, “So, how many do you think there are?”
Takashi forced out a painful laughter, “50 or more.”
“This just isn’t our night.”
Takashi nodded, he lowered his sword and took a step forward, “Where’s your leader?”
No one from the group said anything, Takashi yelled in irritation: “We have come to talk to your leader; this is none of your business! Leave now!”
A werewolf growled, “We have no intention of leaving, that’s the orders from the boss.”
Kohei replied, “We have not come to fight.”
“Too bad, ‘cause then you will die!”
The man changed into a huge black wolf and jumped forward to attack, the rest of his team followed right behind him.
Takashi’s group raised their swords and readied themselves; they were ready to fight to the death.
Takashi said to the members of his group, “Everyone, may the blood of the traitors be spilled this night, or let us die trying.”
The others raised their arms in union and yelled out a battle cry.
Kohei looked encouraging back to his friend, “We’ll survive this.”
Takashi faked a smile, “Indeed we will.”

The battle continued for hours, with the moon raised high. Takashi and his friends were outnumbered, but they were strong and organized.
The first ten enemies were quickly cut down, coloring the ground red with their blood.
But there were too many, and Takashi’s team was quickly cut down, one by one.

Takashi cut off a wolf’s head and had barely enough time to turn, as a vampire attacked him. Takashi blocked the hit with his sword, but the surprising attack sent him stumbling back.
He was now lying on the ground, and was looking up at his attacker; who had his sword raised and ready to kill him.
Suddenly, Kohei appeared and cut off the head of the vampire.
Takashi stood up and thanked his friend; he noticed how bad Kohei looked.
His clothes were ripped and smeared in blood; he had cuts and bruises on his arms and legs too. Kohei looked tired too, even though he tried to hide it behind a smile.
“You owe me.”
Takashi tried to smile back, but he knew the battle would be over soon, and they were going to lose.
His own body was beaten and worn down; he also had a serious injury on his right shoulder, which enabled him to use his sword properly.
“Takashi?”
“Hmm?”
“What’s wrong? You’re spacing out.”
“Sorry, I needed to clear my head.”
“We need to fall back; else we’re going to be killed!”
Takashi looked around the battle field, half his men were already dead or dying, while there were still many more of the enemy.
“I know, but it’s going to be impossible-”
Takashi pushed Kohei out of the way and cut down a werewolf, which had been coming from behind.
“Thanks.”
“Now we’re even.”
The two vampires where surrounded by enemies once again.
Kohei tried desperately to cut down all the enemies surrounding him, but there kept coming.
Beside him, Takashi had the same problem. He could clearly see that they weren’t going to make it out alive.
“Kohei!”’
“What?” Kohei didn’t turn his head, since he was busy fighting a werewolf.
“You need to get out of here and tell Lord Hagashi what happened!”
“No! I’m not leaving you!”
Takashi killed another vampire and was now standing side by side with Kohei; he was gasping and sweating, his body was drained for power and was shaking.
He pushed Kohei towards an opening, in the crowd, “You must go! You’re the only one who can make it!”
Kohei refused, “No! I’m not leaving you to die here!”
Takashi stepped to the left and barely missed a knife being thrown at him. A vampire came from behind and jumped on top of him. They both fell to the ground in a chaos of limbs and swords.
“Takashi!” Kohei tried to help, but was kicked back by his friend.
Kohei could see Takashi’s desperate face beneath the other vampire, “Listen, you MUST go! Tell Lord Hagashi what happened, he will know what to do! GO!!!”
Kohei forced the tears back and ran. He cut down everything that came in his path and didn’t stop at nothing; he almost fell over a dead wolf, but pulled himself together and continued, running away from the battle field.
Suddenly he felt something hit him in the back, with such a great force he stumbled forward; he looked over his shoulder and saw a knife sticking out. Kohei didn’t feel any pain; his body was already starting to shut down from exhaustion. He grabbed the knife and pulled it out, before throwing it on the ground.
He looked back and saw Takashi, still on the ground, with a sword sticking out of his chest.
Takashi turned slowly towards Kohei and cried out with a hoarse voice, “Run, Kohei! Run you fool!” Before he turned to ashes.
Kohei turned and half-ran half-limped away from the battle field, with tears streaming freely down his face. The attackers were so focused in the killing, that they hadn’t seen Kohei escape.
Farewell, Takashi… thank you for everything.

***********
The 5 Lords was sitting in a meeting, as the door suddenly opened. They all turned towards it and saw a staggering figure half-crawling half-limping into the room.
It was a vampire; his hair was sticking to his face, clotted with blood. His clothes was ripped and bloody too.
The Lords stood up in shock, watching as the vampire slowly approached them.
Sho was still sitting in his chair, gritting his teeth in anger and pain; he knew the figure; it was one of the vampires, he had sent out to the challenge, Kohei.
If he was the only one here, it could only mean the other vampires were dead.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Yelled Taki.
None of the other’s said anything, the vampire on the floor said in a rasping voice: “Forgive me… Lord Hagashi… We were ambushed; i-it was a trap… the others… I-I was the only…”
With a hoarse cry, the vampire collapsed on the floor and burned to ashes.
Taki stood and looked horrified at the remains of the creature; then he turned to Sho and hissed at him, “You.”
Sho sighted and waved for the others to sit.
They sat down, Kishiro growled, “You better explain yourself, Lord Hagashi.”
Sho folded his arms and sighted, “I already told you before, what I was going to do. But I didn’t expect things to turn out this way.”
“You are completely irresponsible! It was a foolish thing you did. You said it wasn’t a big threat, and now all your men are dead! How many did you send out?”
Sho didn’t look away when he said: “20.”
Hachi jumped up from his seat, “20?!?! Are you completely mad? We just lost 20 of our men, good ones too and you don’t even seem to be ashamed!”
Sho leaned back in his chair, “I had no reason to believe, it was such a big problem. If I’d known, I would have sent more men.”
Hachi sat down again, but he didn’t look pleased.
A deep sound came from Ryo’s chest, like he was hiding laughter, “I see you handle your situations well, Lord Tsukey. Your men can’t even stay alive through one task, then how do you expect to help ruling two different species at the same time?”
If Taki had been able to blush in anger, then he would have done so.
“Everybody makes mistakes, we just happened to be out of luck on this one.”
Ryo replied coldly, “Be sure not to make the same mistake twice.”
Taki only nodded, he was full of rage and embarrassment.
Sho tried not to show, the pain and sadness in his heart. He had known Kohei and Takashi, they had been good friends.
“There’s nothing else to discuss, so we’ll be leaving now,” said Ryo.
The Lords left the room, leaving Sho alone.
When they were gone, Sho stood up and walked over to the ashes, of Kohei.
He crouched down and took a handful of the ash in his hand; he let it run through his fingers so it joined the rest of the ash on the ground.
Sho closed his eyes, whispering to himself: “Dear Lord, forgive me of my foolishness. Welcome my friends with open arms and show them peace, they have served me well and deserve the best. I pray to them, so that they will rest in peace forever, until the day I join them…”
Sho took out a handkerchief and wrapped the remains of Kohei in it; he stood up and walked towards the exit.
He said, “Tonight, I will send you on your last journey across the sea; may you rest in peace and forgive me Kohei, for my mistakes…”
