Remember how I said that I thought time would go by ridiculously fast after Spring Break? Well, I was right. Al-hamdu lilaah, the weeks are flying on by. All the exams and papers and projects are piling up, but I know I'll survive them and on May 28th, I'll be on a plane back to the States. I CANNOT WAIT. That being said, things have been going all right lately. Today was a resounding success--my roommate Catherine and I hosted a dinner party at our apartment! We picked up some rotisserie chickens from a street vendor guy, and then we made salad and mashed potatoes, and had pita and hummus for the appetizer. I pretty much did the potatoes all by myself, and they were damn good, if I do say so myself. Who knew I was such a master chef? We invited our friend Mahmoud from AIESEC over--he's trying to keep busy since his father died so we figured we'd give him something to take his mind off the whole thing. He brought a tasty ice cream cake for dessert, and he also helped with the dishes...it was really funny because he had never done dishes in his entire life--hahaha. Ah, rich AUC students. But yeah--the whole thing was just a lot of fun--we ended up talking for hours and I don't remember the last time I laughed that much. It was especially good since I've been having a pretty hard time lately. Yay!
I just finished reading The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Seriously, what a good book. It was amazing. It's about this 14-year-old girl growing up on a peach farm in the 1960s. She accidentally killed her mother when she was 4, and her father is horrible to her. When her nanny (who happens to be black), gets involved in a racial incident and gets thrown in jail, Lily (the girl) breaks her out and they run away. They end up staying with these three eccentric sisters named May, June, and August, who are beekeepers. August is just a wonderful character that you can't help absolutely falling in love with, and it's just such a heartwarming and moving book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Speaking of things I wouldn't really recommend, Catherine and I watched Interview With a Vampire last night. I mean, Brad Pitt was ridiculously pretty and all, but I just didn't care for all the gratuitous blood-sucking and neck-snapping of victims. Yes, yes, you can go right ahead and say, "It's a vampire movie! What were you expecting??" That's how everyone inevitably responds when I tell them I didn't really like it. But it just wasn't for me. Brad Pitt was really, REALLY pretty, though. Mmm. And while we're on the subject of movies, guess what comes out in about two weeks??? AAAAAAAAHHH SPIDER-MAN 3 AAAAAAHHH!!!!!!! Hehehe.
In other news, I'm officially going to Jordan on Tuesday! I'm so excited! There was a lot of miscommunication and general complication during the planning process, so I'm actually sort of going half by myself...I fly to Amman on Tuesday night, and then I'm meeting some people in Petra on Thursday and Friday. So I'm going with them, but then not really. But evidently Jordan is very safe, so I shouldn't have any problems. And everyone says that Petra is absolutely breathtaking, so I'm so glad I get to go before I leave Egypt. I'm kind of peeved that I had to pay $377 for a flight that's less than two hours, but whatever. It's my fault for waiting so long to buy the ticket. Hooray for Jordan! And hooray (kind of) for being brave enough to travel by myself for a little bit! I'm actually partially looking forward to that aspect of the trip.
Well, I suppose that's about it. I'm going to go take a shower! I'm very excited about this, because they fixed our pipes this morning, so there will be no more of the intensely aggravating hot/cold alternation and strange pulsating that's been going on for the past month or so. It's going to be the highlight of my week. So yeah...I'll probably write again once I'm back from Jordan! Woohoo! :)
