A BRITISH REICH (erster teil)

Having just written of the progeny of an Englishman who love Ireland, we may now turn our attention to the son of an Irishman who loved England, and who nailed his colours to a different mast.

THE MAN:

William Joyce aka "Lord Haw-Haw" was from an Irish Catholic Unionist family and as a young man had fought for the Black and Tans during the War of Independence. Having survived an assassination attempt from the Irish Republican Army, he left for England where he worked for Mrs Lintorn-Orman's British Fascisti before joining Mosley's more renowned British Union of Fascists. Whilst his oratory and rhetorical skills won him a reputation, his staunch anti-semitic convictions clashed with Mosley's more pragmatic outlook and he was sacked in 1937. He fled to Germany two years later where he was given a job as a propaganda broadcaster to the United Kingdom. He became famous throughout the war for his distinctive nasal voice and penchant for gloating over the tribulations and setbacks of the Allied war effort. After the Axis's defeat, he was captured, put on trial for treason and executed by hanging in 1946.
