R+R backstory month #01

Feb 05, 2011 00:20

So, I've decided my challenge for this month will be to get through the last parts of the R+RII story, namely Zero's Mail, the Asakura Reports, and the information that came with the RE:BORN album itself.  (I know a lot of people wanted me to do Jihaku, and I would have liked to, too, but I decided 200+ pages in one month was a bit of an ask, particularly since I spent the first half a week sitting on my butt eating cookies and watching cartoons on Youtube and generally being full of fail).  I'm a bit nervous since I'm not sure I can fully understand some of the more military wordy bits of Zero's Mail, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Anyway, minus the title, there are 24 scenes in Zero's Mail, and the Asakura Reports are about 24 screens full of text all together, so an average of one a day should get me through by the end of the month.  Here goes.

Scene 1

(footsteps)

Mailman:  Mail here!  Mrs. Krose!

Maria's Mother:  Yes?  Okay, I'll come get it.

(door opens)

Maria's Mother:  Thank you very much.

Mailman:  Is there a Maria Krose present?

Maria's Mother:  Yes, she's my daughter.

Mailman:  Then, this is for her.  It's military mail.

Maria's Mother:  Military mail?

Mailman:  Well then, have a good day.

(door closes)

Maria:  Sorry, mom.  What happened?

Maria's Mother:  A letter for you arrived.

Maria:  A letter?  I wonder who it could be, writing to me?  The only person left who would write to me is Ryuuichi…

(gasp) No, it can't be…Ray?  Ryuuichi told me you were dead.

(she begins sobbing)  Ray… If you're alive… I want to see you...

Asakura Report 01

I shall spell out the proof of that one man's existence here.

"That war changed everything about us completely."
The peaceful history of the cities were burnt away, and people lost sight of the future.  The battle had stolen away not only people's "hope", but everything including their "memories".  May 1946, a little more than a year has passed since the cessation of hostilities on the battlefront of the Second World War in Europe.  In effect, with the fall of Berlin, the Germany of the Third Reich had become a defeated country.  And in the aftermath, that defeated country was a wretched thing.  The former capital, now in ruins, was overrun by enemy soldiers, and the citizens had next to no rights.

The victorious Allied forces divided up German territory into several parts as the spoils of war, and made it their own.  And so, for the past year and even now, the innocent citizens have not even been allowed foolish dreams of freedom.  When humans win, they go and spread even more ugliness… Even if there is to be no more war, there will be no end to human stupidity.  The tyrannised subordination following the war- perhaps that itself is war's true, long lasting terror.  The reconstruction of a defeated country is endless, and an uphill battle...

In the midst of such a war, that abhorrent incident occurred.  So that the tragedy that was covered up shall not vanish into the darkness of history, and in order to leave proof that that man, my former friend, lived, I will record the truth here.  I, who betrayed my friend, shall not pretend to have the qualifications to preach justice... but this, at least, shall be my atonement.

At that time, he died, and lived, as a human.  In his injured body, he fought to leave humanity in the world that would come after.  And that man was surely, more human than any of us...
