I'm probably not the best person to answer this because, although I am female, I'm also bisexual and attracted to some of the H!P girls. Not all of them, by any stretch of the imagination, and not all the ones I'm a fan of, but it is what got me into H!P. Sort of. The reason I looked up Morning Musume on YouTube in the first place was actually Tsuji's pregnancy scandal reaching FandomWank. The name sounded familiar, so I watched a couple videos but nothing really caught my attention until Yossie sashayed across the screen in Kanashimi Twilight and I developed an instant crush on her. My first couple of months in the fandom can be attributed solely to my love for her, but in the course of watching everything containing Yossie that I possibly could, I started to like the other girls as well and I got used to listening to music that I couldn't understand.
I think the reason I took to idols so quickly even though I'd never listened to music in a different language before is because I learned to love music through the Backstreet Boys and Broadway musicals, as odd as the combination might be. The Backstreet Boys were my first real fandom and they helped me get over that "It's manufactured! They're all puppets!" nonsense and taught me that I enjoyed music so much more if I feel a personal connection with the singers. Broadway taught me that music is better when there's a story to go with it, and when you familiarize yourself with all the Hello! Project characters, the songs take on so much more meaning even when you don't actually understand what's being said.
There's also something indefinable about the music itself that I love. I've always unabashedly enjoyed peppy pop music, but Hello! Project songs strike exactly the right chord with me. A few months ago, I tried very hard to get into AKB48 and I just couldn't do it. I'm not trying to start a fight here - I'm just pointing out that it's not just any peppy pop music that does it for me. The AKB48 girls are just as cute and talented, and I can admit objectively that the songs are just as good, but I don't enjoy them as much. I guess it's the Tsunku magic. Plus, I have a weakness for adorable in a totally non-sexual way. I enjoy watching cute girls do cute things. It makes me happy, and I like being happy - and H!P is like pure, concentrated joy.
Hitomi is really beautiful, right? She is my second favorite ^^
But your comment is very interesting. I love specially this: "...music is better when there's a story to go with it, and when you familiarize yourself with all the Hello! Project characters, the songs take on so much more meaning..." That's so true. Also that what you say about AKB48, I think exactly the same, they are cute and all, but definitely they are not H!P.
Thank you for your comment, is really interesting ^^
