After a fabulous weekend

The weekend came and went.

I had awesome time - I can't remember when I've last laughed this much. My sis and our friend were really great company: we shopped, we ate, we drank, we had fun. I guess we didn't do that special things, but we did relax very well.

I didn't buy anything at the shops, but the others found some clothes. I probably spent too much on booze, though.

I was pretty drunk Friday night. I couldn't stop laughing about everything, and when we went to get some late drunk pizza, I broke all the plastic forks. One of the pizzeria keepers came to give more forks to me and said in poor Finnish that he gave them to me because I break all the forks. I know that doesn't sound funny here, but combine that with drunkess and this another joke we had been repeating whole night - you can just guess how we practically giggled like maniacs.

Then, at Saturday, the girls went online and joined this awfully bad roleplay. That birthed even more jokes for us for the night. If someone had been listening to us that day, they would have probably deemed us crazy.

As for the food, it's been a long time since I've eaten this well. On Friday, we went to this restaurant that serves Mexican food. I had a cheese burger and damn good french fries with some awesome sauces. My sis had a burrito and our friend ate a chicken burger. On Saturday we went to an Indian restaurant nearby. We all ate chicken, but with different sauces and some nan bread. It wasn't as good as at the Mexican, I have to say, but it was really fulfilling. My sis apparently did not like the food that much - at least I know now that the next time we should try something different. Lastly, on Sunday, we made tortillas (which is always a good choice). After cleaning up my place (believe me, it looked like a bomb went off) we just lounged until I escourted the girls to the train station.

I meant to read for the exams, but that proved to be impossible task. I had previously (mostly by nights) read this book by Elizabeth Kostova, named The Swan Thieves. I ended up reading it for most of the last night until about 1 am.

I don't really  know what to think of the book. The setting and basic plotline is a good one, wonderful even. It was very captivating to the point where I felt that the book should have been all about Beatrice and her relationships (even though she seemed a bit of a Mary Sue). I liked the characters from 19th century much more than from the present day: especially Olivier was in my opinion a very vivid character and I wanted to know more about him. Then again, Robert's obsession with her and the general idea of being in love with the dead were fascinating too.

What I didn't like about the book is its overly descriptive style. It works when Kostova is picturing the paintings and the relationship between Beatrice and Olivier (to the point I actually tried to find the paintings pictured in the book and thought the two were real people), but when Kate and Mary narrate, I just wanted them to get on with the story. I don't think the reader needs all those details about the two women's relationship with Robert. After all of that, I was almost disappointed at the final conclusion, and felt that about 200 pages could have been cut out just by summarizing Kate and Mary's stories.

I guess I somewhat liked the book anyway, although it doesn't really rank up there with my all time favourites. The only thing I regret about this book is that its potential is so diminished by all the unnecessary details.

Oh well. I'll move to Shakespeare's Midsummernight's Dream next (I got it when I bought The Swan Thieves at the closing sale). I've gotta confess I haven't read that much by him, although it has been my intention for a long time now. But maybe Midsummernight's Dream will be the kick I needed for it.

Only a week now until the Oscars. Can't wait!
