The first time I really started to listen music was when I was around 13. I remember it very clearly: I was in the bus, when suddenly this song was playing in the radio. I just sat there frozen, not wanting the song to ever end. Later, I asked my brother what that song was, and what was the band.
It was Sonata Arctica's Last Drop Falls.
I know, that's a ballad. But I liked ballads back then. They're what made me listen to heavier stuff. Sonata was the first band I ever really listened to, and they are still my favourite band. There are just so many memories connected to them. They're not good just for their music, but also for the emotional value they have for me. They were the band I listened to when I stopped being a child and became a young adult.
Other bands came along, of course. To list few, there were Nightwish, Stratovarius, Sentenced, Rammstein, In Flames, Amorphis, Pain, HIM, Kamelot, Kotiteollisuus, Metallica, Saattue, Mokoma, Stam1na, To/Die/For, Epica, Tarot, Oomph! and others. Newer bands I've taken interest in are Avantasia, Edguy, Savatage and Tristania. Especially Avantasia has rocked my mind lately.
I know my tastes are not the heaviest. In fact, I also love musical music, Queen, Loreena McKennitt and movie scores especially by Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer. I just love big and epic songs, but I also enjoy fast and catchy songs. But I don't have a problem with that. One thing I detest? Elitists. Especially those in metal genre. I absolutely loathe the kind who will come and tell that Sonata or Avantasia are not "real" metal, as if they were some great judges and authorities of what is "real" and what is "fake". Sure, I can acknowledge people for their vast collections of music. But I will not listen to some moron with holier-than-thou -attitude tell how they know it so much better and that I'm not good enough because I don't listen this or that church burning band. After all, there is no right or wrong when it comes to personal tastes. There is no "real" or "fake" metal - there's just music and some people have decided to classify it into genres.
I love going to summer festivals and seeing bands live. The greatest gig I've ever been to was the one Rammstein threw in Finland last year. I was in pure ecstasy for the next week, and some of the gigs I saw soon after that felt almost boring.
This year, I am yet again going to one particular summer festival. Me and my sis have gone there for two years now, and our brother on even more times. It's a fabulous festival - kind of small, but it centers on heavier music, which makes it so great. Last time could have gone better (I drank too much), but maybe we'll do better this year. I've already ordered the tickets!
By the way, I wrote yet another spitefic for
twispitefic . It's called "His Real Face" and has kind of a Beauty and the Beast twist to it. I think I did very well with it and I have to confess that I'd like to work more with the setting, but I don't know if I will. After all, I've got so much to do right now and I shouldn't be really be writing anything.
