Connoisseur of Cartoons
Hillary Clinton, “Buzz” Aldrin, Marilyn Manson, Katie Marcou. What do these different people from different eras and backgrounds have in common? They all watched cartoons at one point in there life. Saturday morning cartoons have been a staple of American culture for the past several decades. They range from bible stories to violent mallet beatings of animals. They spur controversy and create heroes; they are the classics that children remember.
Last Saturday morning I spoke with Katie about this all-important topic. She sat cross-legged on the couch in her faded dried bean festival t-shirt and oversized black shorts. “Cartoons are a tradition for me, they make me feel like a little kid again.” Everyone is looking for an escape, a little bit of altered reality. For Katie Wild E. Coyote is her answer. “That coyote falls off the same cliff a dozen times every episode trying to get the Road runner,” she pauses thoughtfully, “It’s a real important lesson for kids…You can never give up”
Before I finished the interview I asked one last, very important, question. Of course there are many different kinds of cartoons aimed at diverse age groups, but what are her favorites. “Invader Zim is hilarious. But my favorite is definitely Tom and Jerry. You can’t beat that, it’s a classic.” Katie’s lively attitude towards something as simple as cartoons is refreshing.
As our interview concluded she turned and reached for the remote, the TV flicked on and was set to Cartoon Network. Another morning was to be spent absorbing beautifully drawn, endlessly interesting, wonderfully mindless cartoons.
