I find that the curls don't stay if I use a curling iron (hair too thick!) so I use a hair straightener to curl my hair instead. The one I use is by ghd but pretty much any straightener which has a rounded edge on the plates should work too.
My issue is that my hair is too fine! Doesn't seem to curl. A friend said it could be the quality of the curling iron - mine's by Philips and one of those mulit-functional hair irons. I'd no idea a hair straightener iron can curl hair too?! Ghd sounds good since you're the second person to mention it.
Using hair straightener to curl hair is great coz you just need 1 tool to both curl and straighten. I find it faster than using a curling iron too and the curls really stay. Do a google search for curling with flat iron/hair straightener and you can find instructions and even videos. I don't think ghd is available in Singapore, it's from the UK but very popular in Australia as well. I had mine for 4,5 years and it still works great. Another brand that I heard good things about is CHI but I've never tried it before.

It's a little pricey. But, so far, it's been really good, the only one that seem to work for my thick hair.
