[He comes home with the fish bowl and sets them on the floor in the middle of the dining room that doesn't have any dining things in it anyway. Then he lies down on his stomach facing them and just sort of watches for a few minutes. He doesn't get gifts from people very often, and there's also just a sort of calming presence about them to help dispell his ramping 'oh my god i rent a flat i have a mortgage i have carpets, windows, a JOB, my god what is happening' anxieties. So he lies there for a while watching them, lying down on the middle of the floor in the dining room.

[Rose wanders in from her bedroom, cocks her head at him lying in the floor then lies down in the floor on her stomach as well across from him and stares at the fish. She'll wait for him to break the silence.]
[Wow, okay, he just can't help but instantly draw the comparison to her being a flower and him being the blue fish, which was probably not the intended reaction to that.
So there's a pause before the conversation continues.]
Yeah. Ought to find a way to make the flowers last a bit longer. Keep the bowl all nice-looking for it. Be quite plain without 'em.
[She hadn't intended that, hadn't even leapt to it but that does make sense for him to have. She furrows her brow a bit at the pause, trying to figure out what it's about. She always assumes that pauses, words and expressions mean something with him since he so often uses three percent words and sentences.]
Might be able to come up with a formula or somethin' of the sort. We could just keep puttin' fresh flowers in it.
[He figured she would probably notice, since it was a somewhat marked shift in conversational tone, but he's not going to explain it just yet. Still a little close to home, especially with the replacing-the-flowers comment.]
That lemon juice thing gives them a couple of days extra. Take good care of them otherwise, they can last a while. It might get a bit agitated, we keep changing its environment all the time.
[Oh, right, he hadn't thought about that. Woops. The look on his face expresses this thought process.] Probably would. Forgot. Better not do that one. [He lets her. It is nice to be holding hands anyway. Bit of a squeeze for a moment then back to normal.]
[She's not quite sure she's made the connection between fish, flower, her and him yet but she's getting something of it. She squeezes his hand back.]
We'll keep the flowers alive 'long as possible without hurtin' the fish. Good thing the flowers are pretty sturdy. [Now she's wishing she'd sprung for water lilies. She hadn't been thinking about how he'd connect to the flowers. Note for Rose: From now on make sure that none of the Doctor's presents are short lived.]
They always seem to be a bit sturdier than people give them credit for.
[Said somewhat absently. He's almost lost in thought for a few seconds more before visibly coming out of it, looking at her clearly through the fish bowl for the first time since she came home, and saying:]
[She notices that and she's glad he pulls himself out of his brood. She was beginning to feel guilty for getting him a gift. She doesn't like when he gets lost in that brood.]/small>
Talked to Cinna. Got a few days off so I've got nothin' to do for a bit. Want to play hooky with me?
[Honestly, normally he likes gifts a lot. He's not used to getting them, so whenever it happens, even if the gift is dumb, it's normally treasured if any amount of thought at all went into it. And he really liked this one! He just got hit with that analogy when she said that thing about flowers dying too fast.]
Have you? I don't think I've got anything particularly important going on [And even if he does, she's still going to sleep and he can go do it then], so yeah. Got anything specific in mind?

I don't think I've ever been given a fish before.

Flowers die too quickly. Didn't want that. Fish ought to live a long while. [Beta fish particularly seem to be long lived as far as fish go.]

Lemon juice shouldn't hurt the fish either, yeah? [She reaches around the bowl to entwine her fingers with his.]

Thought we might buy a Christmas tree and maybe a canvas so we can do some finger paintin'.

We've certainly got the space for it. And probably the tree as well.
