Hmm.

So.

Today I went with quite a few people to the City Hall meeting (Statesboro, GA, where GSU is). Today the issue of underage drinking was presented to the Hall members.

I'll just summarize what happens at the Wooden Nickel (a "restaraunt") every wednesday night.

From 9 to 11, "Ladies' Night" takes place. (Only) Women are let in free during this period. Alcohol is given away freely, and age verification becomes the lowest of priorities.

Imagine a man with a 3 to 5 liter tank strapped to his back, standing on a picnic table, yelling "Free shots at the picnic table!" and using a hoze and nozzle to literally shoot the unidentified liquor into the mouths of anyone willing. Waiters are even getting drunk and practically pushing people into drinking. My english professor, the person who started this movement for amending the laws etc., even saw one of her 18 year old students totally messed up there. Then, at 11, guys are let in from the long, long line outside for a higher price. Some of their comments have been recorded as "These girls are ready!" and "It makes them fun!" The guys can pretty much get away with whatever they want.

Now the killer part. There are no listed "bars" in Statesboro. So restaraunts with a liscence to sell alcohol have to report food (over alcohol) as 50% or more of their income. However, alcohol given away or paid for with an entrance fee only does not have to be reported this way. So the owner (and a member of the City Hall council no less!) makes money hand and foot like this. There were no signs or menus or any such identifiers that the establishment even sells food.

And no "motion to take action" or some such thing was recorded, so that any of the promises made today can be erased.

Damn.
