Buffy Anne Summers was born to Hank and Joyce Summers on January 19, 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Cute, blonde and bubbly, she enjoyed ice skating, cheerleading and received the vote for Prom Princess and Fiesta Queen at Hemery High School. However, at age 15 Buffy began to have mysterious, violent dreams about women slaying monsters. On her sixteenth birthday a man introduces himself as Merrick, her Watcher. Incredulous, she listens as he reveals her destiny. "In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer..."

Finding no way to deny her obvious aptitude for killing evil things, Buffy stepped into her role as the Slayer with a contemporary perspective and vivacious desire for life.

However, her new secret life as the Slayer took a toll on her personally. Buffy's grades began to drop, her parents fought all the time, and she lost her Watcher. She is forced to burn down the school gymnasium to kill a pack of vampires and her mother and father have her committed temporarily. Shortly after her divorce and compelled to start a new life, her mother packs up Buffy and heads south to Sunnydale.

On her first day at Sunnydale High School Buffy discovers Destiny has already found her. Rupert Giles, the conventional British librarian, is her new Watcher. Plus, as an added bonus, she now lives on the supernatural hotspot for all things gross and creepy. Welcome to the Hellmouth. Joined by Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, her two new best friends and accomplices, Buffy successfully defeats a string of nasties until she meets her first Big Bad: a thousand year old vampire called the Master who's been trapped under a church for a few centuries and isn't happy about it. The Master drowns Buffy but, after being resuscitated by Xander, she impales him and ends his long bloody reign.

Buffy and a mysterious vampire named Angel grow closer. He is cursed with a soul, tortured, and determined to help the new slayer fight the good fight. Nature against them, they fall in love, unaware that the moment Angel experiences true happiness he will lose his soul. The night they consummate their love, Angel's curse is broken and Angelus, the demon that bled Europe for 200 years, returns. Intent on destruction, Angelus opens a portal to a hell dimension but Buffy stabs him through the heart with a sword, closing the portal to save the world. But, heart break, she discovers too late that Willow has returned Angel's soul and it is her boyfriend, not the demon, that is sent to hell.

After recovering over the summer in Los Angeles under a false identity, Buffy returns to Sunnydale for her senior year of high school. A new Slayer has come to town called Faith, and Angel returns by divine intervention of the Powers That Be. Faith is reckless, violent, and ends up killing an innocent man without remorse. She joins the Mayor, Richard Wilkins, as he prepares for his demon transformation. The Mayor sends Faith to kill Angel and she shoots him through the heart with a poison dart. Upon finding out that only a Slayer's blood will cure him, Buffy hunts down Faith and manages to beat her to a pulp but the other Slayer escapes, falling into a coma. Buffy allows Angel to feed from her and he is restored to health. With the help of her classmates Buffy defeats the mayor at graduation, but loses Angel as he decides to move to Los Angeles to relieve the tension between them.

Buffy enrolls in UC Sunnydale and begins to date Riley Finn, an uber-WASP upperclassman part of a secret U.S. government task force created to research mystical and demonic creatures. Faith wakes up from her coma and comes after Buffy, succeeding in switching bodies with the blonde for a short period. Buffy regains her body and Faith runs away to Los Angeles. Buffy and the Scoobies (the affectionate name for Willow, Xander and Giles) defeat a hybrid demon created by the initiative, which is consequently shut down by the government.

A sister appears named Dawn. Though Buffy has memories of the girl stretching back her entire life, she is actually a cosmic ball of energy called the Key placed in the Summers home by the Monks of Dagon for protection. That year Buffy loses her mother to a brain tumor, and Riley, consumed with his own inner turmoil and a sense that his girlfriend will never truly love him, leaves Sunnydale and Buffy behind for the South American jungles. With the burden of caring for her sister and saving the world on her shoulders, Buffy decides to quit school and work full time.
