Quite avowedly, I am an atheist. The way I came to this belief, or lack thereof, is fairly standard: I explored specific religions, couldn’t find one that was logical, fair, and brought me comfort, so I backed off and explored the nature of religion in general, and went through the same process. Eventually I decided that there was not only no

I dont mean to come across in a negative tone, but I have to say that I disagree with several of the points that you bring up on your religious standpoints. Being a Christian, I believe in God/Jesus and heaven and eternal life and all of the other things related to the Christian faith. Although you may not agree with the whole concept of "blessing", I find myself to be very blessed with all that I have. Like you, I also have a stable family, am not living in poverty, and have a pretty decent life. I consider myself blessed and owe all of that to God for providing me with what I have. I also disagree with what you said about offering up our thanks to God for our happiness when we should really thank those who are responsible for what happened. I believe that everything that happens...good or bad...happens for a reason, and that reason is determined by God. That is where the "God's will" saying comes into play. Following your previous example about thanking God for getting you home safe, I believe that you should only thank God for that. I mean, it's true that your friends might have been the one driving you home and got you their safely, but they do not decide whether they are going to get into an accident or not that day... so when you do get home safely, it is only right to thank God for what he has done.
Again, I am not here to criticize you on what you believe, I just wanted to give my opinion.

So that said, I'm glad you made a post from the theist's point of view. Most of the others so far haven't been so assertive. I think you mentioned some of the areas where theists and atheists fundamentally disagree when it comes to belief--but I think another thing you showed with what you said (and a really important thing) is that regardless of who we give the credit to, both theists and atheists (or this atheist at least) do respect and appreciate the good things in our lives. Which, I think, on some level makes us good people.
Thanks for your comment--I found it both thought out and informative.
