My great-grandma just passed away today. I've never been really close to her, but I knew she was a great lady. Mild tempered and really nice. Though she can't really remember me, I know she tries hard to recall who I am whenever she sees me. If I'm not wrong, she should have been 96 or 97 yrs old this last CNY when we celebrated her birthday.
Tai-ma is what we all call her. She's my paternal grandma's mother. When I was much younger, I would follow my grandma to her place at Tampines sometimes 2 to 3 times a week playing with the other kids while the adults gambled. Once she fell really ill and had her left leg amputated. Then 5-6 years ago, she moved to Woodlands, and we only see her once a year during the 2nd day of CNY when we celebrate her birthday. Each year we would be the earliest to arrive. Her petite frame would be rested on her chair, her face would be all lit up when she saw us. When we wished her happy birthday, she'd hold our hands warmly and ask us to help ourselves to the food.
In fact this yr when I saw her, I thought she looked really healthy and seemed to have more hair than the previous years. She was more cheerful too, and her memory seemed better as well. Little did I know that she would be gone just like that. In fact I was looking forward to wishing her happy birthday next year, guess that can't be done anymore.
Rest in peace tai-ma.
