Cara's leathers are the colour of blood, as it should be. Not the brilliant, vivid red of freshly shed blood, when it trickles or runs from a cut, but the darker maroon of heart's blood, when it pumps slow and viscous, deep with the richness of death. They are a practical shade, given her occupation.
Blood holds no fear for a Mord'Sith; they have shed it and caused it to be shed in abundance. They are forged in fear and pain, cut and bruised, beautifully broken long before they are let loose to break others.
Blood holds no fear for Cara, but Kahlan's shining brilliance does.
At least at first.
There is no blood red in Kahlan's garb; she is pristine, untouched in white. But then Confessors do not use the agiel or blade. They have no need to make a man's blood run to control him, not when they can use a simple touch. They are bloodless creatures, Cara thinks, icy and remote, knowing nothing of the needs that surge through normal mortals like the blood pumps through their veins. Kahlan, she thinks, knows nothing of life.
She is wrong. Kahlan is not cold and uncaring, the way that Mord'Sith have always been taught, and she is not entirely untouchable. She may not wear her passions as close to her skin as Cara, but Cara soon learns that those passions are there.
And Kahlan, it seems, doesn't always wear white. On the road, out of sight, she favours more earth-like colours - greens and dark leathers, of a much deeper red than Cara's. Not the red of blood but the rich darkness of earthy loam.
Which is good, because it means that Cara can stop worrying about getting Kahlan dirty when she tackles her to the ground.
