But I always know what comes first. First is a not-to-be-rushed  tour of the food.  Because my husband and I are vegetarians (mostly vegan), mom likes to point out what she has bought for us. Unfortunately ( Read more... )

Thanks, Wendy!

I have another friend whose mother also buys all sorts of food she can never get around to eating. It's easy to do--here anyway. (Lots and lots of ads and we have big refrigerators, and also big packs of food. This might not be the same any more--but when I went to Britain many years ago, most people had half sized refrigerators--while American refrigerators were/are? much bigger; and food there, (for example like what we call potato chips--you call crisps?) were packed in much smaller packages than we usually buy here. It's easy to be tempted, it's easy to over buy, and it's easy to over eat. I have a friend from England who would visit me and one of her goals was to eat all that selection of American food. She really wanted our ice cream. This was a few years ago, (though the last time she was here was just two years ago)...and things may have changed.

Mom just loves food shopping. I don't relate to it at all. Thankfully, my husband does the grocery shopping in our house.

The other thing is that my mother (and my friend's mother) grew up during the depression. They were taught to be prepared, save food. Maybe it's a carry over.
