TG-DOR announcement

Nov 19, 2006 09:50

This Monday, November 20, will mark the eigth annual Transgender Day of
Remembrance. The day is set aside to memorialize those who were
killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. In the past year,
at least twenty-one people have been killed solely because they did not meet
someone else's definition of what a man or a woman ought to be. Some
of these people identified as transgender; some did not. All were
victims of ignorance and bias against gender-variant people.

On Monday at noon, members of the RPI community are
invited to join the Rensselaer Pride Alliance in remembering these
people. Following a procession from Freshman Hill, there will be a
brief gathering at the dry fountain (the circular brick structure
between the Lally and Green buildings) where names will be read. Those
beginning at Freshman Hill should meet at the circle in front of
Barton Hall at 11:45AM. All are invited to participate in the
gathering as well as the procession, provided an attitude of respect
is maintained.
