Adele's Stare

Pressed into a goldleaf book, an icon
with bow lips, dark swept hair.
Her hands caught in awkward clasp,
a coquettish attempt, more beguiling
than the myriad baubles --
gold, copper, sapphire, pearl.
Engulfed in a voluminous train,
her narrow dress looks
back. Wide pupils,
layer upon layer, return
the gaze. Drawing
sight upwards, always
to her protruding
charcoal-lined eyes.
