NaPoWriMo: Poem 26 - (Only the Good) Cable News

Apr 30, 2013 09:52

As part of National Poetry Writing Month, I will be writing 30 poems in 30 days. I will try to write one each day, but if I miss a day or two, I will catch up on later days. Sometimes I will be following prompts; while other days will come from my own ideas.

I only managed to write one poem last night (below), leaving four to write today. Can I do it? Stay tuned!

This poem was taken from things said on the news last night while I was doing my usual transcripts. I made note of anything that struck me as more positive or amusing, then arranged them for effect.

(Only the Good) Cable News
(a found poem)

The fact is that this
is the moment where we are
in our country, and it is a big moment
for our country. I'm a 34-year-old
NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay.
I even wrote a play about that. A human being
gets his life back.

Meanwhile, an Elvis impersonator
is framed by a martial arts practitioner
in ricin letter attacks. Twenty killer
whales followed their
sea diving boat, jumping and playing
in the boat's wake for about an hour.

The story is not being met
with controversy, but rather
with applause. I just thought
it was very funny to see
this elk with a tire
around its neck. A little bit of bling.

Coming up, feeding a camel
is all fun and games. That is,
until you try to put
a toddler's whole head in its mouth.
