I have been watching all the movies that won the Oscar for Best Picture. The next on my list was the 1978 winner, The Deer Hunter, directed by Michael Cimino and starring Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep. I first watched this movie about 10 years ago.

I remember when this movie came out. Apocalypse now and a couple of other movies were out, too. My English teacher sighed and said, "My husband fought in the Viet Nam war...now, with all these movies, he wonders if he's supposed to be crazy."

It's one of those movies that is both good and somehow not.

I agree with your assessment, that it's both good and somehow not.

At least from watching the Vietnam War movies, it seems clear that anyone who came back relatively unscathed was lucky!
