When I talk to people about this kind of stuff, I hear a lot of the preprogrammed 'Conspiracies are for wackos' response. This article rawther nicely addresses the issue.
p.s. I saw this british documentary on a&e tonight about how some people use the notion of a satanic conspiracy to quite damaging results. It focused on a smaller scale version though. Example: a couple's children being abducted by the authorities because the sister of the wife told her therapist that they were planning on sacrificing their son to satan. So, the therapist calls the authorities to let them know and they take the kids away for a little... eventually begrudgingly returning them since they have no actual grounds to keep them

It has come to my attention that the whole 'Satanic' thing could, in fact, be a ploy by the Catholic church. I was downtown checking out all the symbolism and imagery in the buildings and monuments in the power sector (NAC, cathedral, American Embassy) when I happened upon a book store attached to a church building. Almost all of the books on display were of the conspiracy theory type. The Second Coming has been fortold (ie:planned) in this era, and most of the information I read has a definate christian twist to it, so I'd suggest mulling that over.
