Some people believe that this jesture and the word fuck were married during the period of time when the French and English seiged each other's castles with archers. The French used to cut the middle finger, the finger used to pull back the string, off of captured archers. The English archers who still had their middle finger would stick it up at their enemies and say "I'm going to pluck you!".
