IC Information:
Name: Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt
Fandom: Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes
Timeline: Post season 2 of Life on Mars, just before the start of Ashes to Ashes, a year after Sam Tyler passed away in a high speed chase. Gene had recently transferred to Fenchurh East in London and is attempting to move on with his life.
Age: 50
Appearance: Picture for reference Gene Hunt is a 6 foot tall man with pock-marked skin, is slightly overweight and his hair goes just past his ears, flicking out slightly. He usually dressed is somewhat formal dress for work, alternating between different suits.
Abilities: Gene Hunt is an experience cop with plenty of knowledge of the law along with the brute strength needed to back himself up. He is, therefore, by no means a weak man or an introvert, but loud and obnoxious. That is typically how he gets his points across. Like most men of his generation, he has narrow-minded world views and an inability of deal with a changing world. He also has no knowledge of modern day technology and tends to act before thinking. He also boxed as a young lad and has a fantastic ability to hold his drink, even while working.
Personality: Gene Hunt is your conventional seventies man. He's brash, arrogant and judgemental, thinking mainly with his fists. He has an inability to admit he might in some way be wrong about something and works very hard to maintain his authority. He doesn't like to be challenged or upstaged by others and makes sure that he is the king of the jungle, even if it means lying or forging evidence. Usually, he’ll only does such things because, in his own mind, it is justified to clean up Manchester of crime. His aggressive manner can be contributed to "harsh Lancastrian upbringing" and the pressure of society for men to be 'manly' and strong. Regardless of the reason, Gene is the epitome of masculinity, viewing any man opposed to violence or in any way emotional as 'poncy' or a 'Nancy-boy'. Interestedly, he has an attachment to 'male bonding' and prefers the company of men over women, expressing the conventional interests of most men such as drinking, darts, football and making sex jokes or innuendos.

Despite being a DCI and a man of authority, he has a somewhat childish sense of humour and an immaturity when it comes to things such as women. That said, he doesn't tolerate misbehaving while he tries to get cases solved. He likes to play the role of the heroic sheriff, even if his morals are suspect the majority of the time. He never intentionally tries to do the wrong thing; he's simply trying to do his job. To him, the ends justify the means.

An over-the-hill, borderline alcoholic, Gene is very set in his ways and seems much happier to dull any hurt or angst from his job with a drink rather than to openly express it. Though he may see the dregs of society on an every day basis, he never seems to descend into complete cynicism. His job maybe the centre of his life but it doesn't in any way hinder his social life. He still gets out plenty, goes to clubs and has a drink with his mates. He isn't much for procedure or paper work as to him, crimes can only be solved if you get your hands dirty.

Gene Hunt is fairly closed off and not the easiest man to get along with unless you can stand his frank nature and filthy language. His views are offensive, politically incorrect and sometimes downright insulting.

While entering the 80's, Gene hasn't changed much but has somewhat calmed and adopted a more professional air to how he conducts himself

History: As I'm playing Gene Hunt from Life on Mars canon, I've left out the reveal from Ashes to Ashes canon as it’s incredibly unlikely to crop up but if needed, I can sum up those events and add them into his history.

Gene Hunt was born in Lancashire in 1934 and his family life was not exactly a pleasant one. His father is described as being a drunk and fairly abusive, so much so that his older brother Stuart turned to drugs because of it. Gene lost track of his older brother during his teen years and when he finally found him, it was far too late. He doesn't mention much on his father or mother within canon, only that his upbringing was fairly harsh and he doesn’t give the impression that it was a loving environment. He was sent to do his National Service at the age of seventeen before he joined the police force at nineteen. For his first years in the force, PC Morrison acted as his mentor and guide.

Shortly after, he joined the Manchester constabulary and worked under a D-day veteran, Harry Outhwaite, who was accepting bribes from local crooks and gangs. Being new to the force, Gene made the decision to report his senior officer, believing it to be the morally correct action. However, this led to Outhwaite committing suicide and Gene was left with a bad reputation among his work mates. It was only a month later that Gene accepted his first bribe himself and since then, he had never ceased feeling guilty about it. He described his feelings towards it as an animal at unrest in his stomach. Gene doesn't stop taking bribes till 1973 and struggles with this action on a moral level, showing he isn't overly fond of being a bent officer.

In 1968, Gene entered a relationship with a woman who would later be his wife. Little is known about their relationship or what his wife is really like as it isn't touched upon in canon. All that is known about her is that she isn't that bad looking, according to Gene's men. It’s unlikely that the two of them are completely in love as she does eventually divorce him after Life on Mars ends.

When Manchester and Salford police merged, Gene Hunt was transferred to A division and promoted to Detective Inspector under Harry Woolf, who Gene idolised and respected greatly during his time working with him. This is why he couldn't even begin to accept the idea that his mentor might be doing illegal and morally wrong actions later on in life, completely disregarding anyone's attempt to warn him of such things. When Woolf is promoted, he gave Gene the position of DCI, which he has held all the way up to 1973.

Very little is known about what happened from that point until Sam Tyler arrived into the world. Sam's addition to his team threatened to change a lot of what he knew and with Sam's more modern and thorough policing, he often challenged Gene’s theories and actions. However, he never ceased making it clear that he was in charge and Sam was his DI. As much as Gene is displaced and off put by Sam's presence, they still worked surprisingly well together and Sam helped to bring a new sense of justice to the force. It is through Sam's intervention that Gene decided to clean up his act and make a stand against being brought by criminals. Even though he was making changes, Gene’s brutal tactics and violations of human rights laws never really stopped through the whole course of canon, though he does know where to draw the line, he often fears that his own men don’t.

In the second to last episode of season 2, Gene was accused of murder, despite having no knowledge of the events from passing out after consuming too much alcohol. Even though the evidence is against him, he put his trust in Sam to save him, which finally showed an appreciation for Sam's picky and overly thorough methods.

In the final episode, Gene decides to stop a train heist. However he was unaware that there was a corruption case against him and that Sam was part that investigation. Gene didn't know that Sam was going to betray him until Sam's radio accidentally went off, blowing the mission. After Sam runs to contact help, he discovers that the goal of the sting is to get Gene's team wounded or killed to show his misconduct. While trying to protect his men, Gene makes a final dash to get away from the armed thieves, getting shot twice in the process. Regardless, Sam seemed to finally accept himself as part of Gene's team.

After Sam took his 'leap of faith' and returned to service, he and Gene worked together for 7 years before Sam crashed and died in a high speed pursuit. Not long after, Gene transferred from Manchester Police, to the Metropolitan Police Service with DS Carling and DC Skelton. Gene Hunt at some point divorced his wife but its never really spoken of.

Roleplay Sample - Log: The Cortina sped down the middle of Manchester with little to no regard for limits, pedestrians or even the driver in it. Fortunately Gene had a very good grip on steering wheel or he'd be flying about like his passenger usually did. Well they hardly had time to lose; they'd only just been alerted of an alleged potential bomb in one of the banks down Lloyd Street and he was admittedly running a little ragged now. He hadn’t had a break all week, only getting finished up in the late houses. Honest, he hadn’t been to the pub in three days. So naturally he wasn’t exactly in his nicest mood and he didn’t need some bloody bastard trying to imitate the paddies and cause a lot of mess in his town.

Who knew if it was true or just a threat made to scare them or what but Gene wasn't about to piss around taking his time. Somebody could die and surprise, surprise, he didn’t exactly want that. Though, in all honestly, if this was another false reporting then someone was getting a boot up their arse. Probably Sam, he was always the closest. He was probably still in traffic somewhere, poncing around with red lights or whatever else, perhaps he was yelling at the men in the ceiling. Something always seemed to be holding him up.

As Gene pulled up, he smashed his way through a pile of bins, sending them flying across the streets, road and into the pedestrians. Gene, however, did take time to reverse and park neatly next to the smashed in bins. "Lazy bin men were suppose to take these today, useless tossers."

Gene was far from the typical heroic leader that graced big screen, he was rough, past his prime, obviously not in the best shape and yet he still strutted around like he was the king here. In fact, he was. These streets were his to clean up and if anyone could do this job, it was him. It didn't matter how he presented himself, how awful his tie was today or the fact that he reeked of stale fags and scotch, it was how he held himself. The proud Manc Lion, his authority was total. No wonder his men parted like the red sea when he stormed right into the crime scene, ready to tackle the latest scumbags.

Roleplay Sample - Journal: [Gene Hunt is not a man of technology, he can't even work that new-fangled walkman cassette player he'd been given on his last birthday so what hope did he have with this communicator-thing? This is why he keysmashed and randomly pressed buttons till something worked. Though he has no idea its video so enjoy a lovely shot of just his mouth as he bellows into the screen.]

Oi! Anyone out there? This is DCI Gene Hunt and whoever put me in here better tell me where the ruddy hell I am before I track them down, take this poncy little device and ram it up your arse! Are we clear?

[There's a long pause for a second as he looks about.]

...Bollocks. I’m dead, aren’t I?

This game includes horrible mental and physical torture of your character. After reading the rules/faq for clarification, how do you expect your character to handle this and continue to function? Gene is very good at adapting and picking what he wants to acknowledge as fact. He can put up with anything (and he can put up even better if he can find some booze somewhere). He will challenge any torture as a way of holding together his pride. Gene has probably coped with odder, even if he can't quite remember it as Gene Hunt was actually shot at 19 and has lived in his own world helping dead coppers move on for over 41 years so he is no stranger to outside the normal - even if he represses what he doesn't like as a coping mechanism.
