I find it very disturbing to realize how much fear seems to be ruling so many people's lives. A girl in one of my online classes posted about she and her husband were thinking about having a baby in the near future... But, now after reading a section in our textbook about teratogens and many horrible things that could happen to the baby during development in the womb she says she doesn't think she wants to get pregnant anymore! Why? Because she doesn't want to risk something bad happening! This is my response:
I am not a mother. I am not married. I am not on the way to becoming a mother any time soon. But, I wanted to respond to your post. Yes, pregnancy is scary. So many things could go wrong. But, starting a new relationship is scary too. The pair of you could be horrible for each other. They could end up hurting you. You could end up hurting them. And yet, you still start new relationships. Why? Because it could end up being something amazing! It could end up great! Just because something COULD end up going horribly wrong, doesn't mean it WILL end up doing so. I went sky diving about a year ago. It could have gone horribly wrong. The parachute might not have opened! I might not have been securely attached to my jump partner! The plane's engine could have fallen out in midair! But, none of those things happened! And it was one of the most amazing experiences I have had in my life! If you let the bad things that COULD happen dictate how you live, you won't live at all.
Now, I get it. People are scared of the unknown. But really people, living in fear? Not cool.
