"I know what you did."
His head raises as he hears her words, and his brows furrow.
"What?"
He doesn't know how they've gone from talking about her marriage and her career to this in less than two minutes.
"I know what you did, Clark." she repeats, and moves to take a step forward. "And while I appreciate the thought, I'd rather you didn't do it again."
She's not talking about what I think she's talking about, is she? he asks himself. No. She can't be.
"W-what do you mean? Do what again?" he asks, looking back down, pretending to go back to what he was doing.
She sighs. "Come off it, Clark. You're a horrible liar, and you know it. I know, Clark. I know you asked Jor-El to take away my memories."
His head jerks up, his eyes going a bit wider than he intended. "W-What?"
One step closer, and she tilts her head. "You asked Jor-El not to restore my memories of you."
He starts to say something to defend himself, but she holds up her hand and shakes her head, as if she's just read his mind.
"I know why you did it, Clark, and I'm not angry with you. Maybe a little disappointed, but... not angry." He watches her as she takes in a deep breath. "You were just trying to ensure my happiness. I get that. But don't you ever for a second think again that I'd be happier not knowing about you. I meant what I said... I wouldn't change anything."
He nods slowly, taking in her words. "I'm sorry, Chloe..."
"Don't apologize. Please." she says, cutting him off before he can finish the sentence. "Just promise me you won't do it again."
He nods again, and manages a small smile. "I won't. I promise."
She smiles back at him, that same sweet little smile that always makes him feel a little weaker-kneed and makes his heart ache a little in a way he doesn't quite understand.
"You know what?" she says. "You and I? We're gonna be okay." She looks a little positive, a little happier, than she has in a while. It makes him feel good. "You know that, right?"
His smile grows then, a result of her infectious one. "Yeah... we will. Eventually."
She moves closer, and her little arms wrap around him, hugging him. He can't resist the urge to slip his larger ones around her little body, holding her tight.
He knows she's right... or, at least, he hopes she is.
[ooc: Consider this a "deleted scene" from Hex, from the very end. I feel this is something they should have addressed, but it never happened. This can be for canon!Clark or Instinct!Clark, but more likely for canon!Clark. The title comes from a prompt from
justprompts, but was also written for one at
