I have an ear infection and a supervisor who I'm coming to dislike who has no qualms about taking a day off after being on vacation for a week but who gave me a hard time yesterday when I needed to leave because I was in terrible pain and had to go to the doctor.

I take 800 mg of ibuprofen, am able to sleep for four hours, and when it wears off I'm wide awake in agony while I wait for another 800 mg to kick in. It was a terrible night's sleep from 8pm to 7am. I am in so much pain there's no way I can work, not when work involves teaching and caring for 12 three-year-olds but my lead teacher (my supervisor) made it clear yesterday that she expected me at work today. I was getting in to the shower to get ready for work and I just couldn't do it, the entire right side of my face hurts beyond description. So I called work and asked to speak to the assistant director to see if there was any possible way I could not come in.

Here's how the classrooms at the Dartmouth Child Care Center work. Each room has a lead teacher, a teacher, and an assistant teacher (my job). The Center also has four floating assistant teachers who cover vacations and absences. Then there are "helpers" and "subs" who are typically college students who don't have the credits to be left alone with kids but they are there to be an extra body. My room only has me and the lead teacher since the middle teacher left on maternity leave and decided not to come back, so we're in the process of filling that position. Of the four floats, one is on vacation, one is filling in for the five year old class teacher who's on vacation, one is filling in for the preschool class teacher who's on maternity leave and the fourth can only work twenty hours a week because she's in remission for right now from breast cancer.

Knowing all this, there's really now way I can not go to work since I'm the closing teacher today and there is no one to cover for me. Which is so fucking unfair when I feel like this. And I was just going to suck it up and go in but when I moved to get up off the couch to go shower, I almost started crying from the pain. And of course when I was talking to the assistant director about coming in, I started crying. Yay for professionalism. So she agreed that they could use college students and subs to cover for me until 2 but there was no one available who could close the room. So I am going in at 2 with both an inner and an outer ear infection, a fever, and four hours of sleep. Most of the time, I really, really love my job. Today I am feeling incredibly resentful.

So I'm going to go shower and try to sleep until I have to leave.
