Character Name: Davis Quinton
Character Series: Corner Gas
Character Age: ~43
Background:
Corner Gas on Wikipedia.
Personality: Some people are born great, while others have greatness thrust upon them. Then there are those that only sort of trip over greatness every so often, but have a hard time holding it because they got distracted by coffee. Davis Quinton is one of those last guys.
In his home of Dog River, Davis has the distinction of heading the local police force (which, on average, has two police) even if he doesn't really know what he's supposed to be doing. He's never read the supplied material on how to be a police officer, instead formulating his ideal image of what a good, upstanding officer should be based on movies and gut instinct. As one can imagine, this leads to excellent policing. Some of Davis' best policing includes: misspending force budget, allowing misdemeanours to happen because he's bored, and being arrested for solicitation by an undercover police officer he thought was a ticket scalper. He fires his gun "willy-nilly," as his junior officer on the force, Karen, puts it, though generally only at birds he knows he'll miss and up in the air when he's excited. His fondness for making a big deal of parking tickets borders on an obsession and he wouldn't think twice about making up some new minor law, particularly if it would help out in some far-fetched scheme he was in on.
None of these things, however, would mean he's a bad man. Indeed, Davis is incredibly loyal to his community and takes his civic service seriously, even though his idea of the service may not be the widely-accepted one. He's seen to be sensitive and thoughtful, taking time to get to know those he's looking out for in the small town and seemingly considering most of them as friends. Although he carries a pretence of making the distinction between officer-citizen relationships and other sorts, it's obvious that sometimes he's a little too easily distracted to keep those lines from blurring. One line he does try to keep straight though, involves the newer officer on the force, Karen. While they get along well, they tend to find things - both mundane and professional - to spend a lot of time bickering over. Be it over something related to popular culture or how to carry out their jobs, Davis doesn't often budge once he's convinced he's right. This leads to him coming to the conclusion quite a bit that her young and rookie ways need his wisdom to be corrected. We're not going to get into how infinitely this probably annoys the poor girl, mostly because Davis doesn't tend to notice.
Aside from being loyal to his community, Davis also makes an effort to be a loyal friend, periodically organizing group-outings for those he interacts with usually, with varying degrees of success. He'll listen to nearly any problem - especially if there's beer or coffee involved in the conversation - and at least try to offer advice. This should usually be taken with a grain of salt, but the important part is that he tries. On the rare occasions he gets something helpful right, he's happy to have done his duty and helped.
For all his helping, Davis is frequently oblivious to things that really ought to be noticed around him. From improper police protocol to the people around him having issues, he can do a lot of deliberate annoying. This is less out of rudeness or uncaring and more out of a genuinely positive outlook on the world. Too much negativity would muddle that (and, of course, as an officer of the law, he's sure he knows plenty of negativity already) and besides, there are always easier problems to deal with, ones that won't put a whole in his carefully constructed state of blissful ignorance.
When he's not being an upstanding Dog River citizen, a loyal cop, or a helpful friend, Davis enjoys hockey, football, the Hardy Boys, science fiction, classic cartoons, and when other people brew him coffee.

Sample Entry: I remember one time I had this dream, when suddenly I found myself in the past. [Nope, you're not imagining things, that really did just come out of nowhere.] Not the past like when I was a kid, though. Much earlier than that - my ancestors' time. And I had woken up in the past with the cutest little fox watching me... although that may be creepy, now that I think about it. It's not nice to watch people sleep. [There's a pause, while the speaker decides to oppose himself, just to make things fair.] Of course, he was probably just thinking my pants looked funny. I know I sure thought, when I saw them.
Kinda like now, actually. [Finally, Davis lights upon his conversation topic, his tone dimming with muddled confusion. Nothing is making much sense here, so his default method of mystery-solving is being used. First he'll talk to himself, both out loud and quietly, before gathering some unbelievable evidence and jumping to some conclusions.]
Except when I stubbed my toe in that past, it didn't hurt so much. I just woke up. So really, this isn't the same at all.
