The Mansion isn't exactly where Louis wishes to currently reside, but he fears taking Claudia away from it. If it is a supernatural element that brought her to him, he hardly wishes to interfere with its power -- lest she vanish. There hasn't been any time they've been apart, except briefly when Claudia wishes to hunt, and even then, Louis is always close enough to hear her.
Now he sits quietly in a corner of the library, reading. Claudia is nearby (though perhaps not in the same room at all times), and he is also certain to listen for other vampires -- or various supernatural creatures he knows to prowl the area. He's well aware of his vampiric limitations, but nonetheless wishes to be as alert as possible. He doesn't think anyone intends Claudia harm, but his perception has always been lacking.
