One doesn't ride for anything as mundane as transportation; It's a skill requiring diligence and strength, just like any other sport.

You might as well ask, 'Why practice archery when we buy our food at the grocery store?'

I'm reasonably certain shooting can also be considered a sport.

Some people find the things that you find unnecessary and outdated - like riding, or archery - satisfying. Entertaining. Would you rather spend all of summer camp holed up in the library?
