... This is new.

[[Irene got a dose of nanomites. This particular brand is giving her electrical powers, which - considering she's from a time before the Industrial Revolution - she's taking as some sort of magical energy. I'm going to be putting up some open spam starters in the comments - feel free to run into her, or start your own thread, if you ( Read more... )

[Irene more or less storms in, looking black. These powers were so not what they were cracked up to be. They couldn't even be used for breaking and entering!

She takes her place in line for food, arms crossed over her chest, scowling. Her hair was still crackling quietly from time to time, and she realized she was beginning to smell, ever so faintly, of ozone.]

[Irene's got her food and makes her way through the tables, looking for a seat. She turns to survey the back of the hall and locks eyes with the man at the corner table. Her eyebrows snap downwards in bad temper]

"What?"

[She follows his gesture with her gaze and looks from the seat to the table's occupant for a moment before dropping into the seat with less than her usual modicum of grace. Rather than answer his question, she somewhat brusquely asks her own question]

Who're you, then?

[Her eyes flick over his suit at the mention of his name. It sounds an awful lot like 'enigma', and this man certainly is one. Still looking distrustful, she answers his question]

My name is Irene Adler.

[A little brusquely still, but with more courtesy than she's shown so far, she adds -]

Nice suit. Is there a story behind that?

A story for another time, perhaps. [It was polite, but vague enough to let the topic of the mysterious question marks slide. At his mention of his profession, she can't contain a roll of the eyes and a slight huff]

Everyone's a detective on this ship.

As to my name, I fear you are misled. I am, in point of fact, not her namesake but the Irene Adler to whom you refer.

[The statement is rather matter-of-fact, and although she hides her pleasure, she's inwardly pleased. She loves being recognized for her exploits; particularly since she's been cooped up on the Barge with no good mischief for months]

I try to stay out of it as best I can, and yet they simply keep cropping up. I'd say there's at least a good dozen.

[At his later remark, she leans forward slightly. Her smile was teasing and sharp, but her voice was good-humored enough. Parroting his platitude, she said -]

My dear Nygma, what gives you the impression that this or any situation could keep me from fulfilling my reputation?

[She gives a bit of a chuckle, leans back, and bites into the apple on her tray, not really expecting an answer]

I can't deny that it presents certain... obstacles. Not the least of which is my warden. Angels make horrid babysitters.

[She gave him a smirk from under her eyelashes, looking positively devious. Still, she remained fairly close-mouthed, and simply said -]

We shall certainly see.

[She regarded the man thoughtfully, her chin resting in her palm.]

You're a bit of a puzzle yourself. You're a detective, which tells me that unless I'm very much mistaken you're a warden aboard our fair vessel. And yet you ostensibly take pleasure in the possibility of mischief. Most curious.

One would think. [She rolls her eyes; There is no member of the Anti-Gabe Club than his own inmate. At his further statement, she grins.]

Rough time of it in our recent flood? I found it edifying, but then again, I was lucky enough to be some sort of large cat.
