... This is new.

[[Irene got a dose of nanomites. This particular brand is giving her electrical powers, which - considering she's from a time before the Industrial Revolution - she's taking as some sort of magical energy. I'm going to be putting up some open spam starters in the comments - feel free to run into her, or start your own thread, if you ( Read more... )

[These magical power she's somehow acquired are obviously way more potent than she thought. Time for a test-drive, then. It would be foolish to try her them at full strength within the confines of the lower decks, so Irene made her way to the open deck.

She picked a corner that looked, at this hour, deserted - but probably not for long. She looked around, making sure the coast was clear, before raising her arms out towards the vastness beyond the deck and letting loose.

Maybe it was the pent-up energy or just her lack of control, but the lightning bolt that shot out of her hands was both huge and quite loud. Startled, she dropped her hands and turned around, trying to look as innocent as possible]

[OOC: Give me a shout if this isn't cool for any reason ♥]

Iroh had emerged from the stairwell onto the deck just as the streak of lightning had been unleashed - he raised his brows in surprise but said nothing, simply raising a hand in greeting to the young woman near the railings. She wasn't dressed like any Firebender he'd ever seen, but he had heard about a lady on board with electrical powers who was not of his world.

Irene's eyes widened as realized the man had almost certainly witnessed the entire spectacle. Caught, she raised a hand awkwardly, her poise gone for the moment.

"... Hi."

He smiled and approached her, making a small gesture skywards.

"That was very impressive, madam. A new skill, perhaps? You seem....surprised."

She clasped her hands in front of her, trying to put a halt to the jangling buzzing she felt in them. Although she was guarded, she replied, "You could say that, yes."

She regarded him quizzically, then added, "You don't." That was odd, wasn't it? Someone simply accepting that people could shoot - whatever that thing was - out of their hands?

"It is a rare art in my world, something that only a handful of people can do - but it does exist. I was told that there is also a young woman here who can generate..." Not lightning, what was the word Howie had told him? "...electricity, but that...is not you, I don't think? At least not to begin with."

Somehow, without too much though, she finds herself being honest with the man. If this were any other day, she'd wonder what had gotten into her, but today...

"No, indeed. I seem to have come into these powers rather recently. Nothing like this happens where I'm from," she added. Then, tilting her head to the side slightly, she wondered, "There isn't a flood on, is there? One that I haven't heard about?"

"I don't believe so. However, I have heard that there has been quite a rash of people gaining unusual powers, for a day or two." Concerned, his smile faded and he inclined his head. "Have you hurt yourself at all?"

People caring about her well-being wasn't something Irene was really used to. She found it a bit unsettling, though not entirely unwelcome. "I-I don't think so. No, I'm fine."

She lifted a hand and regarded it. After a moment, electricity began to gather around her fingers. She twiddled them idly, manipulating the glowing power.

"I suppose I won't get to keep them, then?" Her voice was clipped. She was almost disappointed. While they hadn't done her any particular good, these powers were certainly interesting.

"Others seem not to have kept their new gifts much longer than a day or so. I suspect that they will fade in time." He paused. "Forgive me. I haven't asked your name."

"Pity." They were a nice bonus, if not something she fully understood yet.

"It's Irene. I would shake your hand, but..." She twiddled her fingers again, still strung with currents of electricity, then shrugged.

Iroh just smiled a little and offered his hand. Handshakes were a relatively new thing to him, but he was getting used to the fact that nobody around here bowed as a greeting. "It's fine, Miss Irene. You won't hurt me."

The look she shot him was dubious, but he seemed calm and confident, so she held out her hand. Even through her skepticism, she was curious.

"Pleasure to meet you, ah... sorry, I didn't catch your name."

"Iroh." He shook her hand, letting the electricity flow through him; the fingers of his left hand sparked briefly, then it was gone. "It is a pleasure to meet you, properly - you work in the library, isn't that right?"

Irene observed the contact of their hands. Interesting. Iroh had hidden depths, that much was certain. At his question, she nodded lightly.

"As of late, yes." She had thought he looked familiar; her time in the library brought her into peripheral contact with most of the Barge's residents, Iroh among them. "I enjoy the quiet there; it's a rare find, on a ship such as ours."

"It is. I often come here for the same reason. And for the occasional lovely view, of course, when fate provides." He lifted his eyebrows and gave a trace of a smile.
