I have been thinking about this for a while; like what I could be passionate about *cough*besides boy bands*cough* and what I could really make a future out of. I guess since I have now finished university and I am meant to on the job trail and following the usual course that has been set before us for centuries - job, marriage, children (well...ok, more recently for women XD), but it's definitely not how I imagined.
I'm starting to think that this is where feminists got it wrong. See, they were like "we want to be equal to men! We want to be able to do all the things they want to do!" - which is not a bad thing....if you do actually want what men want. But in my opinion the choice kind of got narrowed down, didn't it. They always thought to follow men but never thought to find their own kind of path. I'm going to say it because I think it's true - men and women are different. PEOPLE are different. And we can't all follow the same life path that we are supposed to, because some of us just aren't suited to it. I don't understand when following the market economy into a future of repititious anxiety over money and standards and wedded bliss became everyone's perfect dream. Were we all brain-washed as children that "this is life and you should be living it this way, or you aren't living it at all - please feel guilty if you don't fit into it".
I think I've talked about this before haha. But it bothers me, because in the end I don't think I would mind living like that - if I was so passionate about something that I could fit my everything around it. Yet here's the thing - what about those people who either don't have the talent, don't have the capacity, or don't have the passion to be able to do that?
The critics say there is something incredibly wrong with our generation. We are the fattest, the most depressed, the least ambitious, and the most unmotivated. We don't care enough, we spend our time in unworthwhile pursuits, and we flitter from one thing to the next without stability. Obviously the "life plan" isn't exactly working out for a lot of us. Yet, because we are humans and we have a terrible habit of doing this, instead of trying to work out a way to adjust life to accommodate the "problem people" instead we try to change the problem to suit the already functioning arrangement. In essence, humans are really damn lazy and can't be bothered. This is probably the same reason why people never thought of replanting the trees they cut down and now we have environmental issues.
I know a lot of people do still fit into the little slot that the world has left open for them to continue their happy lives, but at the same time, I know a lot more people who don't. People who don't understand how they have come so far and ended up in an open field of "oh, ok, so this is what I've got to deal with now, huh?" It's kind of like how the idea of "patriotism" was driven into people decades ago - it's a concept that reflects a lot of different things, yet has somehow come to mean only one.
So where does that leave us? Are we in a position to redefine the barriers of our futures? Those of us who don't really understand what kind of future is before us (or, most probably do understand but kind of aren't looking forward to it)?
Please write and tell me what your dreams are. I don't care if their stupid or temporary or irrelevant. You can write that one day you want to populate the moon with ants, I don't care. As long as it really means something to you.
