Bringing someone along?: Hermes
Character History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kino_no_Tabi

When he came to her country, Kino's namesake bought a broken-down motorcycle--called by the German term "motorrad" throughout the series--for cheap, repaired it, and named it Hermes.  He explained to Kino that he would make a pact with Hermes, that Hermes would provide Kino speed while Kino would provide Hermes balance.  After the namesake died defending Kino from her murderous father, Hermes spoke up, asking Kino what she would do and beckoning her to ride him and escape with her life.

Why Hermes has intelligence and is able to speak is never explained, and most characters do not seem to find it surprising or unusual that he does, though nothing else like him is ever shown in the series.  Even the few who are surprised quickly accept him for what he is.  His nature is never explored and, aside from his voice and personality, he seems to be a normal machine in every aspect.

Hermes uses his voice quite a bit, though he can also fall silent for long stretches.  When he does speak, it is often to ask questions, insert expressive interjections into a conversation, or complain.  Hermes know Kino better than anyone does, as he often serves as her confidante, and he frequently finds reasons to chide her.  He knows the state of all his workings at any given time, and will readily complain if something is not right.  At his base, he is practical, a machine; he is attached to Kino because she is his rider, not for emotional reasons, though he does not dislike her.

Personality:

With her hair cut and her clothes boyish, Kino's appearance is largely androgynous, which causes some people to mistake her for a boy.  She neither corrects these people nor tries to pretend she is not a girl to the people who correctly identify her as one.  Her gender is not particularly important to her, but she has used male proverbs to refer to herself (in Japanese) ever since identifying herself as Kino.  Kino's namesake was male, and this is a way of identifying with him.

Aside from her appearance, one of the most immediate things one notices about Kino is how level-headed she is. Kino almost always comes off as calm and collected, even in extenuating circumstances. She betrays no anxiety, even when her life is being threatened. In episode two, when the slave traders she has saved are threatening her at gunpoint and she is outnumbered three to one, she coolly removes all her weapons as they command and even is able to talk to them calmly. It is not until after she has killed them that she reveals that she was afraid all along. Similarly, when she fights her opponents in the Coliseum episodes, she is able to speak to them almost conversationally during the battles if they are willing to talk, seeming much more interested in their reasons for participating than in winning the fight and surviving.  In this case, Kino never gives any indication that she was ever afraid, though she readily acknowledges the skill of her opponents.

Kino's calmness stems not from being naturally distant or uncaring, but from her practicality and from her acknowledgment of her capabilities.  Admittedly, Kino is capable of just about anything she would need to do to survive, and she knows this.  She is aware that she is very skilled with her guns, but she is not overconfident at all.  As such, she dedicates herself to cleaning her weapons and practicing simply drawing her guns every morning, because she knows she relies on them for her life and must be able to draw them at a moment's notice.  She is not overly cautious, but she is alert and attentive and never reckless.  One instance that demonstrates this is in the Coliseum episodes; she is not ashamed to hide behind the rocks when it is necessary, but she does not hesitate to come out into the open when the time is right.  Kino may be dignified, but she is not proud.

Her apparent calmness can also be attributed to her being withdrawn.  As a traveler, Kino has become accustomed to knowing people for only a few days at most, and then never expecting to see them again.  She does not try to become close to the people she meets--in fact, she confides to Hermes that she gets nervous whenever she gets involved with someone's affairs.  Kino is afraid of becoming attached to anyone or any place; though she tells herself her rule of staying in a country for only three days is so she'll be able to see more countries, she also admits that it is probably really because she is afraid if she stays longer she will settle down.

Despite being withdrawn, throughout the series, Kino is consistently curious.  From the youngest age we see her (almost twelve), she has many questions for the original Kino.  The more questions he answers, the more questions she finds, and she becomes curious about the custom in her own country.  Asking her parents what would happen if she doesn't get the operation that will turn her into an adult is apparently a very unusual thing, as she is surprised when her parents are shocked and angry at her.  This shows Kino's curiosity as an exceptional trait.  Though it is her curiosity that leads to the original Kino's death and having to leave her own country, Kino retains her interest learning things.  Traveling from country to country and meeting people, she always finds things to ask them about.  She is always receptive to hearing histories and personal stories from the people she meets--the exception being the king who tells her the detailed history of his country's harvests.  The only thing that ever holds her curiosity back is her tact, as happened when the old woman who thought she was a robot died.

Though Kino says she says she is afraid of settling down and does not want to get attached to anyone, she also says the reason she wants to keep traveling is to keep meeting people.  She avoids involving herself with the affairs of the people in the countries she visits, but sometimes she does deliberately involve herself.  An instance of this is when she helps Nimya find a way to test her flying machine.  Kino likes Nimya and is interested in her dream of flying, though she does not actually believe it will work until she sees it, but she leaves despite Nimya's protests.  She says it seems like things are going to "get complicated," and does not offer any further explanation.  Kino often likes the people she meets, but she does not allow herself to stay and become attached.

Kino often does nothing in the face of the wrongdoings she sees in her travels.  She is reluctant to take a side or get involved.  When she watches a woman kill a man, a murder she could have easily prevented if she chose, the reasoning she gives for not interfering is that she "is not God."  Kino is reluctant to judge any one side, as she has seen that often every side is wrong or right in some way.

Extra:
Character Abilities: Kino does not have any magical abilities, but she is an excellent fighter despite her small stature.  She is very nimble, and can dodge well.  She is also an extremely talented markswoman; her teacher called her a genius and trained her extensively.  Her talent with guns can also be employed for hunting, and Kino is a skilled tracker.
Possessions: Kino is a traveler and, as such, she is always prepared in more than the boy scout sense.  She has on her person two guns--called “persuaders”--as well as numerous knives, as well as her clothes, coat, helmet, and goggles.  On Hermes she carries all her supplies-- provisions (dry goods) sufficient for a few weeks and a flask of water, a tent, a sleeping bag, ammunition and gunpowder, basic toiletries, a few simple dishes and utensils, and a little bit of money.

Log/Prose sample:

Hermes hummed and whined softly under Kino as they sped over the paved streets.  "Don't squeeze so hard!" Hermes chided.  "You're not going to fall off.  The streets here are nice!"

Kino didn't answer, her mouth setting in a firm line.  She loosened her grip just a fraction and turned toward the line of trees in the distance.

Splendor was one of the more interesting places she'd visited, to be sure.  She had been in a country that constantly changed before, but not to this extent--not to the extent that the weather and the people changed as well.  If asked, Kino wouldn't deny that she was fascinated with this place and the people in it--the strange, varied natives and the even more varied people who had somehow been brought here.  She knew there were still many stories she hadn't heard, stories of countries she didn't even know how to reach--Hermes, useful though he was, couldn't take her to different worlds.

Except that he had.  Or, he had, if the people here were to be believed.

No, that wasn't right.  The way it was supposed to be, the music box should have been what brought her here, though a music box taking her somewhere was a lot stranger than a motorrad doing it.

She didn't know why the grocer had given her a music box with her supplies.  Finding it had been a surprise, but surprise hadn't prevented her from winding it up before she put it in her coat pocket and mounted Hermes to head for their next destination.

The next destination--that was where it was time to go now.  Another world or not, there would be other places to visit here, and Kino was a traveler.  It was exciting, really--an entire new world to explore.  She'd had a very interesting three days in Splendor, and she had appreciated the free lodging and shopping, but she was ready to leave.

She had been told that she wouldn't be able to leave, and hearing something like that did put her on edge.  But she didn't really believe it.  Splendor might be difficult to leave, but there were many difficult things about traveling.
