Summary: Kyle never particularly wanted kids.
Kyle never particularly wanted kids. Growing up he always was the kid - coming along a full 15 years after Rebecca. When they would meet up with the rest of the family at Christmas everyone would have nothing to talk about, nothing to think about but whoever the youngest addition to the family was. And yeah, babies were cute, when they weren't spitting up, but they just didn't seem to do enough to warrant all the attention. Add to that the growing realization that girls just didn't seem to do it for him, and he figured the chances of him ending up with a housewife and a brood of his own were pretty remote.
So when it hit him that the guy he'd just rescued from a cosy little life complete with beard might be a couple months from being a father, he was pretty much exclusively thinking of how much it could screw with Oliver's head, how much it could screw with the good thing they'd finally got going.
The first time he saw her she reminded him of Oliver. Which was crazy, he reasoned with himself - it was just because he knew she could be half-Fish, no way would he have noticed it in a sea of babies. But he did notice it, and he couldn't help but love her a little bit every time she scrunched up her face in an all too familiar way.
When Oliver finally opened the damned envelope Kyle knew he had to love her, had to take care of her. Taking care of Oliver Fish was part of his job description, and she was a part of him. In loving her, he was loving him. So Kyle spent his time playing the supportive boyfriend, helping him fight for her, helping him get closer to her. He had to make sure Oliver could live at peace with himself.
He was careful to make sure their relationship stayed strong, careful to make sure Oliver and his daughter were doing the bonding all the books talked about. It never really occurred to him that maybe he should do some bonding of his own, though he insisted she be brought back to his place, that it made no sense to take her to an apartment that already had more occupants than it could really handle.
The day they brought her home Oliver was a mess, every bit the worrying, unconfident new parent. So Kyle made lots of coffee, did lots of tidying, heated lots of bottles. Every time she woke that night they would wake too with a start, but Kyle would get told to go back to sleep, that Oliver had to get used to it. And supportive boyfriend or not, he liked his sleep.
He wakes up the next morning to an empty bed, and that wasn't supposed to happen any more. He wanders out to the living area and finds Oliver sprawled across the sofa, empty bottle fallen to the floor below an outstretched arm. He figures its best to leave him be, so just picks up the bottle and goes to take care of the empty take out boxes and washing up, puts an already full trash bag down the garbage shoot. He's just about to take a shower when soft not-quite cries start coming from the crib he'd put together the weekend before.
He's picking her up before he knows it, moving swiftly into the bathroom, hopes the door might muffle the sounds a bit. Jiggles her around a bit like every mom he's ever seen, pulls off the sleep suit she's in once she starts kicking around. She starts really yelling though, and he wishes he'd picked up her pacifier but it's probably lying about 3 inches from Oliver's head, so he improvises with his pinky. In seconds she's latched on, and he breathes a sigh of relief.
Just when he decides it's safe to go back out he catches himself in the mirror. Can't help but stare at the tiny thing cradled in his reflection's arms. He's not sure he's holding her right, she seems kind of awkward but when he looks down at her she's staring up at him, big blue eyes, still sucking on his finger, face relaxed.
He remembers the list of people who had wanted to be doing what he was now - Stacy, Rex, Schuyler, Gigi, Kim... even Mitch Lawrence wanted her. But here she is. A sociopath for a mother, born in a blizzard, carried onto cracking ice, open heart surgery and then kidnapped. He doesn't know about every other child, but it's gotta be a miracle she's here. Or at least, says the scientist in him, she had certainly had the odds firmly stacked against her.
A rush of unexpected feeling surges through him. He wants to protect her from all the crap that's thrown at her, just as he's always wanted to protect her father. The difference is, he realizes, she has absolutely no defenses of her own. She needs him. Needs him when Oliver's still unsure of whether a gay man can be a good parent. Needs him at every hospital check-up she's gonna have to go to. Needs him when the spunk she's sure to inherited from her mom grates with her father's shyness.
He holds her a bit tighter, realizes she's probably starving like he always is first thing in the morning. He thinks to himself that every other baby might be pretty dull, but this one is not even 3 months old and already got enough life story to fill a book.

When Oliver wakes to an empty crib his heart is in his mouth until he hears low talk from the bed. Kyle's sat back against the headboard, Sierra cradled in one arm, formula bottle in the other hand, and by the sounds of it is giving her an in-depth lecture about the physiology of the thyroid gland.
It was obvious that Kyle had always wanted to be a father, the same way Oliver had. Why else would he have fought so hard to get Oliver to face up to reality, spent so much time making sure they would have everything the baby needed. But while Kyle's been calmly organizing, Oliver's been feeling more out of place than in all his closeted existence. How could anyone have actually trusted him with a child? Would be so easy to let Kyle take over, but he's determined that he's gonna live up to the title given to him by the paternity test.
“Morning Daddy” Kyle says with a smile as he wanders through, waving Sierra's hand at him.
“Morning Sierra” he whispers back and leans down to kiss her forehead. “Morning Daddy”, and Kyle gets the same treatment.
When he pulls back Kyle is looking kind of stunned, which makes no sense at all, but when it changes to a soft smile he just figures it's been a long night for both of them. So he curls around his boyfriend and joins him in watching their daughter.
