painful saucony passion run

I'm in pain. In more ways than from the run.

My 15km race, being in Wave 1, started off at 6:30am. Is that earlier than usual?  Having dinner at brewerks (I stayed off the beer) last night from 9pm to 11pm didn't help either. However, i did wake up, and felt great at 5am.

I only left home at 5:45, with 15 minutes to get to the race location (East coast park car park E2, where the hawker center is).  After a slight delay turning into the car parks, I parked. It was already 6:15a. My plans to bring my bag, to put my car keys, were dashed as I knew that I would be late to the start line if I still had to do bag deposit. So I had to stuff my huge car key, into my little pocket in my running shorts. I then did a short jog to the start line, and used that as my warm up.  I only got to the start line 5 minutes before the gun!

Everything went downhill from the start.

I had to bandage the heels of my feet because they had suffered from abrasion from my run on friday running without socks on the beach. The new Saucony Trigon 5 running shoes has been giving me this problem, though they are very comfy otherwise.  I also ensured that my socks were folded down so that there was extra cushioning between the top back part of my shoes and the abrased area. All this preventative measures didn't help and after the 2nd km, I could already feel that my right foot's heel was bleeding and there was constant rubbing.

At the same time, I could start feeling my outer part of both feet, the area behind the little toes where I land, were starting to get blistered.

If that was not enough, the urge to pee also started at the same time. Uggghh...

Aside from all the above distractions, I managed to maintain a 4:15-4:30 min/km for most of the first 10k. After I crossed the approx 9km mark, my legs just didn't want to move anymore. They just felt like 2 super heavy pillars and they just wanted to stay glued to the ground. The last 6kms were just a huge mental exercise for me. Some stretches, I just felt that I should just stop to walk, and at some stretches, I just dug deep to try to go under the 5 min/km speed.

There was a little inspiration seeing Xianming pass me on the opposite side of the track. I was at my 12km mark, He was at about his 13km mark. He had a huge grin on his face, looking as if he had won the race. He did look very sleek in his running outfit, and also, looked fast.

Time taken in the end: 1hr 22 minutes
Average pace 5.03min/km - not too bad huh...esp with all the above challenges

To top it all off, I'm now nursing a stomach ache. It started once I reached home, and it feels like food poisoning. The last can of 100Plus I took tasted very diluted. I really don't know what's causing this.

My tighs are sore. I couldn't hold my clutch down for long periods, and couldn't get down stairs easily...

In summary, I'm in pain. I do feel rather happy with my results, though I think I could have gone faster...
There, done. My first run only race this year.

I met someone at the finish line. He asked, so are you taking part in the bay run? I told him I wasn't sure. In my mind, I'm starting to loathe run only races. Thank God for triathlons!

Done. My first 15km competitive run!

first, saucony passion run, race, run
